Since embarking on your natural hair journey, how has your perception of beauty altered and influenced how you care for your daughter’s hair?
I went natural long before having children, so while my perception of beauty hasn’t changed, I am definitely glad to have learned so much about caring for natural hair over the years so that caring for my daughter’s hair now is a no brainer.
What do you want your daughter to think of her natural hair?
I want her to love her entire self, hair included. I don’t want her to ever envy someone else’s hair to the point where she doesn’t like her own.
How does your daughter influence you to embrace your natural hair?
Well, since I went natural way before having children I had embraced my hair 10,000 times over, but having her does ensure that I constantly expose her to images, characters, and influences that show how others embrace their natural hair.
If your daughter were to ask you why her hair is different from everyone else’s, what would your response be?
“Because God made all of us different, special, and He makes no mistakes. Now come here so I can twist your hair!”
Those that think their hair is “difficult” tend to feel negatively about it and that translates into feeling negative about themselves and their natural beauty.
Do you think teaching your daughter how to properly care for her hair has an impact on how she perceives her hair and do you think having natural hair yourself plays a role in how children will perceive their natural hair?
Most definitely! Those that think their hair is “difficult” tend to feel negatively about it and that translates into feeling negative about themselves and their natural beauty. My daughter is just three years old, but she already tries to do her own hair and mimic what she sees me doing to her hair. By the time she is old enough to truly do her own hair there won’t be any mystery on how she will achieve her desired look. And for those times when she gets frustrated, mommy is always here to play hairdresser!
