When Growing Out a TWA Goes Wrong…
By · Updated April 5, 2015

Humor. Some argue that the natural hair community has lost a sense of humor but KiKi aka Mahogany Knots has not! After cutting her hair multiple times over the years, she has decided to grow her hair out (for now”> and styling has been a struggle. I remember growing out my TWA and it was no joke. To clarify, TWA means teeny weeny afro and I use the term strictly for hair too short to coif into a ponytail.

While my hair was growing out of the TWA phase, I strictly stuck to finger coils. They took an hour or less to install and I only re-styled them 1-2 times per week. A wash and go was not an option for me because it was not long enough to preserve it with a pineapple and I was not aware of the multi-pineapple method. Once my finger coils started to look like starter locs, I transitioned to the flat-twist out and the rest was history. If you have not discovered your go-to style yet, here is a good laugh about trying to avoid looking like Fredrick Douglas or Justin Timberlake in his NSync days.

My TWA faves

  • Garnier Pure Clean Fortifying Conditioner (daily conditioner and detangler”>
  • SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk (moisturizer and styler”>
  • EcoStyler Gel (styler for fingercoils”>
