NaturallyCurly: When did you start embracing your curls?

Savannah: During my freshman year of college, I really started embracing my natural hair texture. Throughout high school I had always fought against it with straighteners, but learned to really love it. It also helped that my then boyfriend, now husband, loved my hair curly and really encouraged me to stop straightening it.

What’s your daily hair routine?

Savannah: It’s more of a weekly routine for me. I wash and deep condition my hair twice each week. This makes my curls less frizzy and keep my color vibrant. I try not to use much product at all on my hair in order to avoid “crunchy curls.” I typically use a curling mousse and blow-dry gently with a diffuser.

What are your go-to styles?

Savannah: If I’m not wearing my hair down, I typically use a head scarf to put it up in a stylish way. You can check out one of my recent videos on how I wear my hair with a scarf!

What are your favorite products?

Savannah: Batiste Dry Shampoo is my favorite product! It gives my hair that extra volume in between washings.

How do the seasons affect your regimen?

Savannah: During the wintertime my hair tends to get a little drier, so I try and take extra care to condition it and use oil treatments.

What ingredients does your hair hate?

Savannah: This isn’t really an ingredient, but my curls don’t seem to respond well to oil-based hair products or heavy gels. They tend to weigh my hair down and make my curls look limp.

How did pregnancy affect your hair?

Savannah: I feel like pregnancy made my hair a little straighter, but it also gave it more volume! Since having Soren, my hair has thinned out a little and the curls aren’t as happy.

We love your vibrant red hair. How do you prevent color damage?

Savannah: I do the following: 1″> only wash my hair twice a week, which helps lessen the amount of washout, 2″> try not to use hot water when rinsing my hair, 3″> minimize the amount of heat I use on my hair to prevent damage and fading, and 4″> gravitate towards color products with natural conditioning elements.

Have you ever experienced damage? How did you nurse your hair back to health?

Savannah: Because of my more coarse texture, I’m constantly working on keeping my hair nourished and conditioned. I also try to make sure I give it a good trim here and there to help with damaged ends.
