Can You Comb Out Your Locs? A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide
Can You Comb Out Your Locs? A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide

Most people think of locs as a hair commitment that is difficult to get out of. If you’ve come to the end of your loc commitment, know that cutting your hair and starting from scratch is not your only option. I combed out my locs five years ago to experience my hair’s curl pattern. I wasn’t confident enough to cut off my locs, so I sought an alternative way to release myself from my loc commitment while retaining some length.

Before you get started, stock up on essential loc products that will be critical to helping comb out your locs.

What you’ll need:

  • 1. Conditioner
  • 2. Water
  • 3. Rat-tail comb
  • 4. Regular comb
  • 5. Patience
  • 6. Time

1. Wash and Condition your Hair Before Combing out Your Locs.

Allow your hair to retain as much moisture as possible. Your time commitment will determine how you section your hair. For my locs, I dedicated a few hours daily to unlocking my hair. I started at the crown of my head so that I could put my hair up in a bun or ponytail each day. The entire process took 2 weeks. With time and patience, you can finish your hair on a weekend.

2. Use Loc-Friendly Products

Can You Comb Out Your Locs? A Detailed Step-by-Step Guide

After you’ve sectioned your hair, apply your favorite leave-in conditioner to the first section and massage it into your locs. Make sure each loc is completely saturated, and let it soak for about 5 minutes.

3. Expect Shedding

Use the pointed end of your rat-tail comb to pick your loc from the bottom up. Add water to maintain moisture within the hair. Continue this process until you’ve completed your first section. Please note that you will not retain the exact length of your locs. It is completely normal to experience shedding.

4. Remove Knots

Once a section is complete, use a regular comb to remove knots and shedded hair.

5. Apply some TLC to your hair.

Apply a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment to restore the moisture in each strand. This will be a huge part of your hair regimen moving forward. The right deep conditioner will restore your curls and keep your hair healthy.

6. Get Rid of Damaged Ends

Whether you trim your own hair or have a stylist do it, make sure you get rid of the damaged ends. A good trim will allow your hair to grow longer and stronger.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully combed out your locs and retained some length. Now what? Take the time to learn your hair. After I unlocked my hair, I retained shoulder-length tresses. Over the years, I’ve experimented with various styles and colors. I learned that longer hair is not for me. My curl pattern has more body when it is shaped and tapered.

Rediscovering your hair can be loads of fun, but know that finding the right products will require trial and error. Have no fear—NaturallyCurly is here for all your pre-and post-loc care tips.

What do you think? Will you use the comb-out method to unlock your hair? Which loc care tips do you want to see more of in the future? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Should You Use Coconut Oil on Curly Hair?

How often is coconut oil referred to as the end-all, fix-all to your problems? The natural oil is known for having numerous health benefits. Beyond revitalizing your skin and hair, it is a superfood with strong medicinal properties. Despite the benefits of coconut oil for curls, the magical oil has also proven to be damaging to others, depending on the texture and porosity of your hair. Some people wonder if coconut oil is good for curly hair. In other words, there are pros and cons to incorporating coconut oil into your regimen.

Pro: Coconut oil can encourage hair growth and thickness

Should You Use Coconut Oil on Curly Hair?

Coconut oil can hydrate, nourish, and clean the scalp by removing buildup. Applying a small amount after your wash day allows the oil to penetrate the hair shaft, seeping deeply into the follicles. This strengthens the hair as a whole, promoting growth, fullness, and density. Sounds great, right? If your hair type is on the drier, coarse side, it will do the exact opposite.

Con: Coconut oil can promote protein buildup

Although coconut oil cleanses the scalp, it can also cause a protein buildup by restricting moisture on dry or coarse hair. This will block the needed moisture and cause your strands to dry out. The end result? Split ends and hair breakage.

Pro: Coconut oil can tame your curls

If you have frizzy hair, adding a little coconut oil will surely tame your curls. Applying a small amount before you unravel your twist-out will reduce unruly strands. Depending on your hair’s porosity, it can keep your curls under control.

Con: Too much Coconut oil can be bad for your hair

Typically, naturals never follow the “dime size” instructions on the back of a conditioner bottle. The truth is, we use the old-fashioned guestimate—trial and error—regarding how much of a product will suffice for our hair. In the case of coconut oil, oversaturating your hair is counterproductive. Because it is a heavier oil, it will weigh down your curls if you use too much.

WANT TO UNDERSTAND YOUR TEXTURE TYPE?
To understand all there is to know about your curl pattern, porosity, density, reliable curly hair products and the best hairstyles for you, take the NaturallyCurly Texture Typing Quiz right now!
Caring for curls, coils, and waves can seem overwhelming!

You’ve probably tried several techniques and products and been discouraged by the results. That’s because each head of hair has unique characteristics that influence your curls’ behavior: the shape and size of the hair follicle, hair strand thickness and length, and even its relationship to moisture.

Let’s get started!

Do any of these apply to you?
I’ve used heat tools such as a blow dryer or a flat iron in the past 3 months.
I’m currently transitioning to my natural texture.
Neither apply to me
Do you have locs?

Locs are an intentional matting and tangling of the hair to create rope-like structures. Hair is not combed during the locing process which allows hair that would normally shed to remain among your strands wrapping around each other to form a new texture.

Yes
No

Whether your locs are based on curls, coils, or waves, they still need special care and specific maintenance regimens related to your texture type. To build the best loc care and maintenance, consider the state of your curls before you loc’d them when taking this quiz. That way, you’ll be able to get the best results at the end of the quiz, helping you select the best products and ingredients for your texture type.

CURL TYPE

Learning the specifics of your curl pattern will help you understand what styling techniques and products work best for your unique set of strands. You’ll also love our NaturallyCurly content that specifically addresses your curl needs!

Here at NaturallyCurly, we embrace wavy, curly, and coily patterns by treating each set of curls with equal amounts of care, curl love, and respect.

Which of the following options best describes your hair?
S-shaped hair that sticks close to the head; very easy to handle; easily straightened
S-shaped hair that sticks close to the head; a little resistant to styling; it has a tendency to frizz
thicker, more coarse wavy hair that has a few more actual curls, as opposed to just waves; tends to be more resistant to styling and will frizz easily
Which of the following options best describes your hair?
Curls show a definite ringlet pattern; curls are well-defined and springy with the circumference size of sidewalk-chalk
Curls are well-defined and springy with the circumference size of a Sharpie; curls can range from bouncy ringlets to tight corkscrews
Curls are voluminous, tight corkscrews with the circumference size of a pencil; curls can be either kinky or very tightly curled, with lots of strands densely packed
Which of the following options best describes your hair?
Curls are tightly coiled and springy; when stretched or even un-stretched, has the circumference size of a crochet needle or smaller
Similar to 4a and when stretched or even un-stretched, has the circumference size of the spring in an ink pen
Very similar to 4b except that the curls coil tighter at the root/scalp; hair doesn’t spring or move much unless manipulated such as a braid-out or twist-out
POROSITY

Porosity is the ability of your hair to absorb and retain moisture. Knowing your porosity is just as important as knowing your curl type. Porosity ranges from low to high, depending on the condition of the cuticle.

Is your hair color-treated or do you use heat tools more than once a week?
Yes
No
DENSITY

Often confused with hair thickness, hair density measures the amount of hair you have on your head, and the proximity of the follicles to each other.

How long does it take your hair to dry with no product added?
It takes a long time to dry, hours and possibly days
It takes 1-2 hours
It drys quickly, in a matter of minutes
Part your hair down the middle. Now without forcing the two sides apart, how much of your scalp can you see?
I have no problem seeing my scalp.
I can see some of my scalp.
I can see very little of my scalp if I can see it at all.
WIDTH

The width or diameter of your strands affects the amount of volume you have as well as your hair’s overall strength, durability and ability to retain length.

Take a single strand between your fingers, close your eyes and then roll it between your fingers. What best describes your strand?
I don’t feel the strand at all between my fingers.
I can feel the strand between my fingers, and the strand is slender, pliable.
I can feel the strand between my fingers, and the strand is durable and hard to ignore.
LENGTH

Length is not really a texture type category, but from Big Chop to hip length, the length of your hair can affect your curl pattern, shrinkage and styling techniques.

How long is your hair?
Very short (i.e. close crop, fade, TWA)
Chin length
Shoulder length
Past your shoulders

Top 10 Protective Styles to Slay your Vacation, Plus 5 Tips on How to Maintain Them

Vacation hair is supposed to be fun, carefree, and low maintenance. When you’re about to have a little fun in the sun, the last thing you want to think about is washing, detangling, twisting, and blow-drying your hair.

The less manipulation, the better. Because this is the season for both vacations and protective styles, we couldn’t help but provide you with a guide on how to live your best hair life. Time to throw your curls into some ultra-chic hairdos and indulge in a lot of R&R.

Look at ten protective styles that will slay your vacation hair and learn five tips on how to maintain them.

1. Passion Twists

Top 10 Protective Styles to Slay your Vacation, Plus 5 Tips on How to Maintain Them

Passion Twists are a fun alternative to faux loccs or box braids. What I love about this style is that the longer you have them in, the better they look. Although the style thrives on messy, un-kept twists, that doesn’t mean they don’t need to be maintained. If your twists start to unravel, you can use mousse to re-twist them to hold them together.

2. Feed-in Boho Braids

Top 10 Protective Styles to Slay your Vacation, Plus 5 Tips on How to Maintain Them

Feed-in braids are so simple yet give off such a chic flare. I love how the stylist did the feed-in braids and finished them with a messy, bohemian vibe. To keep this style intact, oil your scalp daily and tie your hair down each night with a silk scarf.

3. Braided Updo

Updo’s usually don’t require much maintenance. With gel like As I Am Long Luxw GroEdges Edge Controller, a brush, and a head tie, you’ll be able to rock this style for at least a month.

4. Goddess Cuban Twists

These beautiful twists are low manipulation and require low maintenance, which is a win-win. To refresh and cleanse your scalp, keep the Cantu Refresh Apple Cider Vinegar Root Relief in rotation to soothe your scalp from irritation and keep your scalp fresh.

5. Knotless Braids

Knotless braids bring the fun into style experimentation. This hair braiding method has less strain on the root of your hair because it is installed without the knot. This makes your hair easier to style without feeling like your hair weighs a ton and pulling on your edges.

6. Braided Bun

A regular updo will last you a week, but a braided one can last one month. Any style that will protect my hair for more than a week is a keeper in my book.

7. Fulani Braids

Whether you style your braids or let them hang low, make sure you know how to maintain them! African Pride’s Black Castor Miracle Braid & Scalp Cleansing Rinse will keep your scalp clean and moisturized, which will assist in prolonging your style.

8. Braided Ponytail

A classic ponytail is perfect for a vacation. Not only is the installation quick and easy, but you can also take it down and redo it whenever things get a little out of hand.

9. Faux Locs

What I love most about faux locs is that you can get the look without the commitment of the style. Maintain your faux locs the same way you would a set of box braids.

10. Goddess Box Braids

You may have noticed a trend recently, such as the goddess and boho vibes, where braids and twists are undone. This bold style is great if you’re looking to wear a style for about two months. Since this style lasts longer, clean it weekly with the Creme of Nature Scalp Cleansing Treatment, Scalp Refresh, and Braid Wash.

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

Whatever stage you’re in during your natural hair journey, staple items are needed to positively impact your hair’s strength and growth. A great deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner are just as vital to your strands as the tools and instruments used to style and manipulate your hair. The right comb and brush can stop breakage, alleviate split ends, and control frizz. Different combs and brushes do different things – you may use one brush to detangle conditioner-soaked hair in the shower and a different one to give volume to your roots when dry.

Here’s a rundown of the 10 best combs and brushes you need for your natural hair and how to use them.

1. Denman Brush

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

Need to detangle those curls? The Denman Brush is the fairy godmother of detangling. It is known to get down to the nitty-gritty of eliminating knots and cutting the detangle session in half. Most effective on 3c and type 4 hair, it enhances your curl pattern with each stroke of the brush.

The collection of brushes comes in different shapes and sizes, all geared towards protecting your hair. The classic style brush features wide rows of effective bristles that separate and define wet curls while detangling it. This brush can be used on wet or dry hair, but I feel you’ll get the best usage on wet hair. The collection includes brushes for curling hair while blow drying and smaller brushes for children.

2. Felicia Leatherwood Detangler Brush

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

This is a crowd-fave among stylists for its ability to detangle and help provide definition, especially for high-density naturals. It also won the Best of the Best award for Best Tools for Type 4 coils in 2020. Coilies love the flexible rows of bristles, creating a wide tooth comb effect and minimizing the amount of shed hair. You can use it to gently detangle knots and use it in the styling process to evenly distribute products and create definition.

There are several brushes on the market that curlies love that also follow this flexible row design, like the Rizos Curls Pink Detangling Flexi Brush and the EZ Detangler Brush. LaToya Ebony compared the Felicia Leatherwood and EZ Detangler brushes side by side and found them to be comparable, but the designs may have different results depending on whether you hold them vertically or horizontally when detangling (a matter of personal preference).

3. Wet Brush

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

The Wet Brush is a magical tool that can dance through the curliest of manes. This brush is offered in various shapes and sizes and minimizes tangles, frizzing, and breakage. There are many ways to utilize this brush. Perhaps the most effective is while deep-conditioning your hair. It can also be used post-wash and while blow-drying.

4. Ouidad Double Row Detangler

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

Some people go through their natural hair journey without a comb. I couldn’t imagine doing this! A comb like Ouidad’s Double Detangler is perfect for maneuvering through thicker hair. Created with double rows of comb teeth, it can handle your strands without being rough or heavy-handed. This is a must-have for curly girls in the 3a-4 hair types.

5. Crave Naturals Flex DMC Detangling Brush

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

The Crave Naturals Flex DMC Detangling Brush is ideal for exfoliating, cleaning, and addressing your scalp. The open-cushion structure makes it easy to eliminate bacteria and build-up while using. This brush is especially good for detangling and removing fairy knots. Brush your hair from root to tip with a conditioner of your choice. Spend additional time on the roots to exfoliate the scalp and stimulate blood circulation.

6. Tangle Teezer

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

The Tangle Teezer is known to detangle your hair, assist while blow drying, and help you achieve your desired hairstyle. This multi-purpose brush comes in a variety of shapes and sizes that will address your hair’s individual need. I like these brushes because they cater to dry-styling. When you’re trying to achieve that Cardi B pearl updo that she wore to the Grammys, the Tangle Teezer is a tool that can help you execute it. These brushes start at just $12. You can’t go wrong with that!

7. Hercules Sagemann Magic Star Hair Comb

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

Combs with wider spaces between the teeth make for a stress-free detangling session. Hercules’ Sagemann Magic Star Hair Comb is heaven-sent for women with really thick hair. It has been designed so that the teeth won’t harm or damage your hair. Not only does this contribute to the overall health of your hair, it allows you to style your hair without the pain of detangling. More on the costly side, the Magic Star comb retails at $25.

8. Cricket Ultra Smooth Coconut Pick Comb

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

I bet no one thought they’d need a hair pick after the 80s. The truth is, this classic hair tool is a staple to natural hair. The Cricket Ultra Smooth Coconut Pick Comb will lift your twist out or afro and add an appealing volume to your style. It is best to use this pick in the styling phase of your hair routine.

9. Scrunchitcurls Scrunch It Brush

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

Unlike many of the brushes on this list, the Scrunch It Brush is not a detangler – it is a styling brush. The unique design of this brush makes it an excellent tool for helping curls to form. The rows of bristles help create tension to create smooth, tight ringlets. Curlies use it by holding the brush upside down, twisting their curl around the barrel and handle, then sliding the brush away from the scalp. You can watch how it’s done here. It can be used when styling on wash day or to refresh and touch up curls.

10. Conair Hi-Style Rubber Cushion Brush

Top 10 Brushes for Naturally Curly Hair

While most of the brushes mentioned above can be used on wet or dry hair, know that the Conair Hi-Style Rubber Cushion Brush will cause more harm than good on dry hair. It will be your best friend if you use it while shampooing and deep conditioning. If you use it on dry hair, it’ll be your worst enemy. Now that we got that out of the way, this brush is a favorite to curly girls with type 4 hair. It seems to penetrate each tangle, and fairy knot in a way that makes detangling less of a choir and more of a simple task.

Have you tried any of these brushes? Please share your experiences with us below!

10 Hair Products to Refresh Your Curls and Extend Wash Day

I am a fan of Alikay Naturals Wake Me Up Daily Curl Refresher. It smells delicious, refreshes my curls, and leaves it feeling hydrated. According to Liz, another NaturallyCurly reader she wrote, “Love this curl refresher. I’ve used it either on my dry hair or after spritzing my hair a bit with water. I like that the spray is more of a mist, vs other refreshers that have a more concentrated stream. For my purposes, I like to spray all over my hair. The spray wakes up my curls and provides a little bit of hold too. I don’t know if I would call the scent “mango”, it’s more like the smell of gummy candies, but either way it isn’t unpleasant. I have 2c medium density mid-to-high porosity hair.

Second and third day curls never looked better! Curls Aloe & Blueberry Juice Curl Moisturizer is made of pure aloe and blueberries which have the benefits of strengthening hair, adding shine, and reviving curls. NaturallyCurly reader Rosa says, “So first of all, this smells SOO good! It’s a very natural, sweet berry smell and I love it. My hair is very mixed. I have so many textures, curl patterns, and porosities. It’s mainly 2B to 3B though. Its so hard for me to refresh my hair as it likes to flatten/mat together and become oily overnight. So I can’t really get hair past day 3. But I used this in hopes of getting it back to pretty day 1/2 curls and gosh my curls are so bouncy and soft I love it. I wet my hair with some water then sprayed some of the product in my hand then smoothed my hair down with it then scrunched it. After air drying I scrunched it a bit more with my favorite oil and it just looks so good. This is my new favorite product.”

This SheaMoisture Curly Cocktail that Left my Hair Moisturized and Defined

It is a good idea to switch up your hair regimen over a period of time. I’ve noticed that when I use certain products on a consistent basis, they eventually lose their zest. It’s also great to have alternative products on deck, just in case your go-to products are discontinued or unavailable for in the immediate moment. There are a wealth of co-washes, deep conditioners, and leave-in’s that can work magic on your hair. I’ve found that using products from the same collection can work, but things can get really interesting when you take the time to switch it up.

In efforts to find an alternative hair regimen for my dehydrated mane, I decided to try SheaMoisture’s Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oil High Porosity Moisture-Seal Co-Wash, their 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Rehydration Treatment Masque, and Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Multi-Action Leave-In Conditioner over the span of a month and a half. Honestly speaking, my hair hasn’t reacted this well to a product since my review of SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore collection.

This SheaMoisture Curly Cocktail that Left my Hair Moisturized and Defined

This co-wash is probably the best one I’ve used, ever. I used to swear by As I Am’s Coconut CoWash, but then I gave this a try and I am completely in love. My initial wash with SheaMoisture Mongongo & Hemp Seed Oils Co-Wash left my hair feeling coated with moisture. My curls were soft, defined, and hydrated. I almost felt like there would be no need for me to deep condition my hair because it felt like the co-wash had restored what was depleted. I used this product every 3-4 days over a span of 6 weeks. With each wash, my hair detangled quicker and I was left with healthier, softer curls. This is largely due to the mongongo and hemp seed oils which are known to eliminate frizz, seal your ends, and lock in moisture. If you’re a fan of the As I Am CoWash, you will really enjoy the mongongo & hemp seed oil co-wash.

This SheaMoisture Curly Cocktail that Left my Hair Moisturized and Defined

For such a lightly whipped Rehydration Treatment Masque, it packs a lot of power in your hair. It was one thing to feel the immediate moisture from the co-wash, it was another thing to experience the aftermath of this deep conditioner. Because I used the co-wash every 3-4 days, I decided to use the masque once a week. I didn’t want to overwhelm my hair with too much product. I noticed my hair had much more bounce to it and was definitely more moisturized.

This SheaMoisture Curly Cocktail that Left my Hair Moisturized and Defined

Up until now, I never used a spray as a leave-in conditioner. I was so used to creams that I wasn’t convinced a spray would be heavy enough to capture and mold to my hair’s curl pattern. This is why you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. After each wash, I’d spray the multi-action leave-in conditioner evenly throughout my hair. I’d oil my scalp with Marshay Nicole’s Scalp Growth Oil + Serum and add some Eco Styler Gel for extra hold. The combination of those products resulted in some of my best twist outs, no lie. Because the leave-in has a lightweight formula, my hair didn’t feel weighed down by product. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by using a spray instead of a cream.

The Pros and Cons of Oiling Your Scalp
The Pros and Cons of Oiling Your Scalp

Moisture is undoubtedly very important to the development of your hair. In order to keep it growing strong and healthy, oiling your scalp can work tremendously. Although there are tons of benefits to adding oil to your hair care regimen, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Moderation is key. There are both pros and cons to oiling your scalp. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages to oiling your scalp, along with a few products that’ll keep your hair moisturized.

Pros to oiling your scalp

Moisturizes your scalp: Oiling your scalp is a great way to add useful vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids to your hair. These ingredients contribute to nourishing your scalp, encouraging growth, and maintaining moisture.

Stimulates blood circulation: Massaging oil on your scalp helps to stimulate blood circulation and contributes to relaxing the body.

Aids dry scalp and dandruff: Dry scalp can be extremely annoying and embarrassing. Nothing like seeing flakes and build up mixing with your curls. The moisture that oil adds to your scalp is enough to leave it hydrated, preventing the build up of flakes and dandruff.

Cons to oiling your scalp:

Can make your hair look greasy: Too much of oil can give your hair an overly-shiny, dirty look. Adding oil on top of the natural oil your hair produces, can be a bit much. If you apply in moderation, you can avoid the greasy look.

Too much oil can cause build up: You can oil your scalp to prevent dandruff and build up but too much oil will encourage it! When you allow oil to soak in your scalp it can cause infections. As long as you maintain your wash schedule, you can avoid excess oil in your hair.

If you’re looking to add a few good oils to your hair regimen, we’ve got you covered with a few favorites from the Naturally Curly shop.

Did Your Natural Hair Texture Change Due to Heat Damage? Here’s how to Recover
Did Your Natural Hair Texture Change Due to Heat Damage Heres how to Recover
Style that caused heat damage

About three years ago I suffered from severe heat damage. I had always wore my hair in a twist out, so I decided to switch it up and install a weave. I was going to the BET Awards so it was the perfect opportunity to test the waters. I went to a stylist who straighten my leave-out, while the rest of my hair was braided up and hidden under tracks. For about two weeks, I rocked a cute, short blonde bob that made me feel brand new. Unfortunately my lifeline for weaves, braids, and crochet styles are usually very short. By the time I returned back to NYC from LA, I was ready for my signature twist out style. I removed my tracks, washed my hair, and sat with a deep conditioner. To my surprise, parts of my curly fro had turned straight in the front. I frantically called the stylist. She explained that this happens sometimes and after a few more washes, it would return to normal. A few washes turned into a few months with curly hair in the back, and a blatant chunk of straight hair in the front. I resorted to protective styles for a few months and then eventually cut it all off to start fresh again.

Did Your Natural Hair Texture Change Due to Heat Damage Heres how to Recover
Hair after heat damage

Heat damage is no joke. It can leave your hair feeling helpless and crippled when your textures don’t match in such a noticeable way.

Luckily for me, I was able to recover through protective styles and eventually doing another big chop. While you can never really change your damaged texture back to its original state, you can help nurse it back to health with these tips and tricks.

The obvious way of fixing damaged hair is by cutting it off and starting fresh. If length retention is a hair goal, you can imagine how traumatic this can be. Still, damaged hair is counterproductive to growing long, healthy hair. The first beneficial step to recovering your tresses is cutting your ends completely or snipping some off bit by bit.

Whether you decide to cut or retain the damaged hair, you can hide it under a protective style. Braids, faux loccs, crochet styles, weaves and wigs all assist in promoting some growth while your hair is protected. As your hair grows out, you’ll be able to trim it bit by bit between styles, shedding the damaged hair.

Now that we got past the logistics, here are some products that will help strengthen and restore your hair. Masques, protein treatments and routine deep conditioners will be instrumental tools in getting your texture back to normal.

Using these products interchangeably can help strengthen and rebuild your hair after heat damage. For me, I found that there was more than one road to recovery. I used a combination of products to address the health of my hair. Ultimately, after the damaged hair was gone, it was up to me to maintain a beneficial routine that would focus on growing strong strands.

What about you? How do you address heat damaged hair?

I Tried Madam C.J. Walker’s Beauty Culture Collection on My Coily Hair

Madam C.J. Walker has single handedly launched a haircare empire that made her the wealthiest African American businesswoman until the time of her death in 1919. Walker developed her own hair and skincare line after battling with extreme dandruff and hair loss. While working with an African American hair-care entrepreneur, she educated herself on products that would promote growth, retain moisture and nourish the scalp. With her new knowledge of helpful ingredients, Walker developed her own collection. Help from her daughter and husband gave her the opportunity to market, promote, and sell her products. This was a revolutionary move for women of color in those days. Long after her death, Walker’s name and products live on and speak to her legacy as an innovative businesswoman who changed the game for women of color and women with natural hair.

Knowing the extensive history of Walker, it was important for me to try her latest collection, Beauty Culture. The Beauty Culture line carries a variety of specialized products that range from coconut oils to protein treatments. Catering to all natural hair types, you’re sure to find the exact product that you need. For me, it was important to find a co-wash that would give me the squeaky clean feeling that shampoo does, without constantly stripping my hair of moisture. I wanted a protein treatment that would completely protect and restore my hair and I needed a leave-in conditioner that would help me manage and prolong my twist-outs. Lastly, I wanted to find a product that would refresh my curls in between washes. I was basically on the hunt for 4 products that would bring life back into my mane. I decided to test each product over the span of 3 weeks to get an accurate idea of how well they’d work with my hair.

Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Hella Drenched Hydration Cream Co-Wash I Tried Madam C.J. Walkers Beauty Culture Collection on My Coily Hair

I haven’t had good luck when it comes to finding an effective co-wash. Because my hair is prone to scalp build-up, finding a co-wash that removes dirt without stripping my hair of it’s natural oil is important to me. My default has been to suck it up and shampoo once a week instead of the suggested once a month with co-washes in between. I was excited to sample the Hella Drenched Hydration Cream because if I liked the product, I wouldn’t have to be so dependent on shampooing every week.
First of all, the hydration cream is extremely light and airy. Because it has a lightweight formula, it is easy to underestimate the power of the co-wash. I massaged the product in my hair from root to tip and allowed it to sit for a few minutes. After a rinse, I immediately noticed how soft and easy it was to comb through my hair.

Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Inches Reconstructing Moisture Protein Treatment I Tried Madam C.J. Walkers Beauty Culture Collection on My Coily Hair

A good protein treatment is vital to rejuvenating your hair. Even if your hair is healthy, you can continue nourish it by applying bi-weekly or monthly treatments. After my co-wash, I applied the Reconstructing Moisture Protein Treatment and let it sit in my hair for approximately 20 minutes. For best results, it’s good to cover your hair with a plastic shower cap and sit under a dryer. If you tend to apply treatments and deep conditioners while in the shower like I do, apply the treatment, cover your hair with a shower cap, and rinse your hair out as the last step to your shower routine. My immediate observation after washing out the protein treatment is that my hair felt cleaner and more manageable. I was able to comb through with ease and there was less shedding. My ends felt well-moisturized and I noticed a sheen to my curls.

Madam C. J. Walker On Point Game-Changing Texture Definition Cream I Tried Madam C.J. Walkers Beauty Culture Collection on My Coily Hair

If you’re looking for a product that will effectively define your curls, then the On Point Game-Changing Texture Definition Cream is sure to do the trick. Sometimes leave-in conditioners can have your hair feeling limp and lifeless. With the definition cream, I noticed that my twist-outs took shape. There was less frizzing and more curling. Beyond the tighter curl pattern was the locked in moisture that my hair experienced. I noticed that after using this product for 3 weeks, my twist-out lasted a bit longer and was able to sustain an acceptable level of hydration.

Madam C. J. Walker Giving Lyfe Texture Refreshing Styling Spray I Tried Madam C.J. Walkers Beauty Culture Collection on My Coily Hair

After 3-4 days of a twist-out, I usually wash my hair to have the ‘fresh curls’ look. Refreshers are cool, but sometimes the heavy oils or water-base mists are counterproductive to my styling needs. With the Giving Lyfe Texture Refreshing Styling Spray, you’re able to waken your curls without weighing them down. I noticed immediate frizz-control and moisture due to the Coconut, Benne, and Pecan oils. This was such a great way to give my hair a midweek pick me up.

My overall experience with the Beauty Culture collection was a good one. The journey to finding natural hair products that work for your specific hair type can be stressful and costly. You’ve hit the jackpot if you can find products that will grow and thrive with your hair. I found each product to be useful collectively and independently. For the days that I don’t do a protein treatment, I know my hair will flourish with just the co-wash and definition cream.

If you’re interested in sampling the Beauty Culture, you can shop the entire line at Sephora.

5 Signs to Know Your Curly Hair Needs a Trim

Length retention can be a big part of the natural hair journey. In addition to deep conditioning, maintaining moisture and sealing your ends, trimming your hair every couple of months will contribute to growth. Depending on your hair type, a trim can be something you do every quarter or every 6 months. Professional hair stylist Kamilah, better known as Ms. Hair and Humor, says, “I always tell my clients a good rule of thumb is to trim their hair with the seasons. That’s a minimum of 4 times a year.” Regardless of when it’s done, know that every time you cut off dead hair, you promote a strong, healthy mane.

Your hair will let you know when it’s time for a trim and if we’re paying attention to the signs, we’ll follow suit. When we’re not paying attention, having a good stylist on deck will help you figure it out. I know we all grow weary of going to a stylist, requesting a trim, receiving a cut, and feeling completely unsatisfied by our unintentional new hairdo. “Hairstylists are not on attack on length but the average client doesn’t trim their hair enough. Then it becomes a drastic cut,” says Kamilah. If you’re not sure what to look for, here are 5 ways to know it’s time to cut the dead weight from your hair.

5 Signs to Know Your Curly Hair Needs a Trim

Fairy Knots

Fairy knots occur when single strands of your hair knot together and create bigger knots. Once your hair knots, it can make it difficult to comb through or detangle, thus breaking your hair during the process of daily manipulation. If you start to develop fairy knots, do yourself a favor and grab the scizors. Not only will a trim get rid of your knots, it will serve as a solution to breakage.

Thicker Hair Thins at the Bottom

If your hair is long and thinning on the end, then it’s time to trim to a length that is visibly thicker. Harshly combing or detangling your hair with the wrong tools can result in thinning ends. If you’re able to see your shirt or skin through your hair, that is a good indicator that your ends are thinning. Twist-outs with thicker roots and frail ends can also mean it’s time for a trim.

Split/ Rough Ends

There are so many reasons why the ends of our hair split or become rough. Too much heat, not sealing your twists or braids, not enough hydration, excessive chemical manipulation and much more. Split ends create thin ends and actually restrict the hair from growing to its fullest potential. When your hair loses moisture, your ends tend to suffer. “Most of the time when women say my hair feels dry, it’s their ends they’re talking about and don’t realize it,” Kamilah says.

Loss of Shape or Definition

Has your hair ever grown to a certain length and suddenly loses shape or definition? Sometimes your curl pattern thrives at a certain length that results in a lot of volume. Once it surpasses that length, it falls flat, and loses shape. It’s important to take note when that happens. Might be time for a trim!

Excessive Shedding

I’m sure you’re tired of combing or styling you hair, only to find lots of it on the bathroom floor. A little shedding in normal, but when it becomes excessive, that’s a good indicator that your hair is not thriving at its current length. Constant shedding is also evident in hair that has endured breakage. Trimming your ends can aid shedding and eliminate breakage.

It may seem illogical to trim your hair in order to see growth. The truth is, routine trims go beyond length retention. It is one of the best ways to keep your hair strong and healthy. Although there are many ways to tell your hair may need to lose an inch or two, these 5 hair symptoms are major red flags that your hair can thrive once you let go of dead ends.
