Our hair can play a huge role in people’s self-esteem at every stage of life. Not only can our hair’s appearance feel like a big deal, but the ritual of haircare is also a big part of many people’s lives, especially those of us with curls. So, when people lose their hair to cancer, trichotillomania, or other illnesses, they lose a lot more than just hair.
Many cancer patients express that having a wig helps normalize their lives and regain their confidence during a time that is difficult both physically and emotionally. However, many cannot afford wigs during their treatment. Fortunately, many organizations provide free wigs for cancer patients or for those who have lost their hair.

I know what you are probably thinking after reading that title. Should a woman with fine hair use oils? Everywhere you look in the hair care world, the answer seems to be “not really.” Well, I’d like to disagree. Women with fine hair can use oils to improve the health of their hair. Before diving into this topic, let’s ensure we get some key definitions out of the way.
What is hair type?
The natural hair community has several hair typing systems that help us better understand our manes. Two naturalistas with very similar curl patterns might have very different heads of hair, simply because of the width of their strands. Natural hair varies according to curl patterns, porosity, and width. If you want to determine your hair type, try taking our Texture Typing Quiz.
What is fine hair?
The term “fine hair” is a characteristic of your hair type that refers to the width of your hair strands. Fine hair has a small diameter compared to medium or coarse hair (which has larger diameters). Whether or not you have fine hair depends mainly on your genetics, and all hair types, regardless of their curl pattern, can have fine hair.
Is fine hair the same as thin hair?
No, fine hair is not necessarily thin hair. “Thin” hair refers to hair density and not hair width. Thin hair means that one has few hair follicles per square inch. A fine-haired naturalista can have a full mane consisting of strands that are small in diameter.
What are the characteristics of fine hair?
Fine hair might appear full when washed and air-dried but falls flat and limp when straightened or blow-dried. It’s also easily weighed down by heavy oils, creams, and butters. Curlies with fine hair may find they don’t hold a hairstyle very well and need to use lightweight stylers like mousses or hairsprays.
When overmanipulated, fine hair can be fragile and easily prone to breakage. It has also been found to take easily to color or dye.
What oils work best for fine hair?
As fine hair tends to get weighed down by products, you’d be better off using products that are quickly absorbed into the strand and that do not leave a heavy coating. The best lightweight oils for fine hair range from argan, almond, grapeseed, and jojoba oil and do not leave a greasy residue on our fine strands. Let’s break down the best ways to use lightweight oils for fine hair.
1. Argan oil
Argan oil is a light plant-based oil high in vitamin E and antioxidants, which help treat and repair damaged strands.
2. Almond Oil
Almond oil is one of the lightest drupe oils, high in essential fats, proteins, and magnesium. Both oils are easily absorbed into our strands and do not weigh down fine hair when applied modestly.
3. Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is a wax ester that is used as a non-greasy, moisturizing hair oil. It is the most similar to the sebum produced by the sebaceous glands on your scalp. Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross features a lightweight and nutrient-rich jojoba oil that was a 2023 Best of the Best Winner for type 2 curls.
4. Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is high in monosaturated fats, which nourish, moisturize, and strengthen hair strands, improving their appearance and protecting them from environmental damage.
5. Grapeseed Oil
Grapeseed oil is non-greasy, odorless, and colorless. Like avocado oil, grapeseed oil is high in linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that helps to improve our hair’s elasticity. Aunt Jackie’s believes in the power of grapeseed oil; see what they’ve done with it.
Since fine hair is easily prone to mechanical damage, it is beneficial to use oils that have protective, strengthening, and restorative properties. Avocado oil and grapeseed oil can actively work to protect fine hair from environmental or mechanical damage.
How to Use Oils on Fine Hair
1. Hot oil treatment
Heat 2 tablespoons of almond or avocado oil. Apply sparingly to the length of your hair, focusing on the most delicate ends. Massage gently into your scalp for several minutes. Allow to sit for 15 minutes. Proceed to shampoo. Remember, heated oils are better absorbed into our strands and do not leave a heavy coating. All curly hair types with fine hair can benefit from this method.
2. As a sealant
Fine hair is more prone to mechanical damage than other hair widths. Therefore, you’ll need to have your LOC method on lock. Use three to four drops of argan oil. Rub it in your palms to heat it. Dab it sparingly along the length of your hair. Remember to apply your sealant sparingly – there’s no need to slather oils onto your scalp. This will leave your hair weighed down. Type 4 textures with fine hair will benefit most from this technique as their curl pattern is most prone to losing moisture.
3. Pre-poo or overnight treatment
Pre-poo treatments can aid in keeping our hair strong and moisturized and prepare our hair for wash day. Heat 2 tablespoons of avocado or grapeseed oil. Rub it onto your strands from tip to root. Only saturate your strands if you use a clarifying shampoo the next day.
Don your plastic cap and cover it with your satin cap. Type 2 textures with fine strands can benefit from a pre-poo instead of a sealant, as it does not require as much oil as a hot oil treatment and will be cleansed of the hair. This will eliminate any trepidation about your hair being weighed down.

There is never a shortage of styling products you can use for wavy hair, whether your texture is thick, medium, or fine. The best products for wavy hair can help keep your waves smooth, frizz-free, and full of bounce. Type 2 waves can have a loose, S-shaped pattern, beach waves, or loose spirals with a thicker and coarser texture.
While formulas that promise beach waves for straight hair or perfect spirals for tighter curl patterns usually garner a lot of buzz, there aren’t many headline-making products out there for naturally wavy hair. People often assume waves don’t even need product assistance. As someone with Type 2 hair, I’ll often hear, “You’re so lucky your hair just dries like that!”– as if I didn’t spend 20 minutes in front of the mirror that morning trying to get my hair to lay just so!”
“It’s another common misconception that wavy hair is thick, but plenty wavy girls are on the finer side,” says celebrity stylist Justine Marjan, who–besides being the go-to girl for the Kardashians–counts Type 2s like Chrissy Teigen, Ashley Tisdale, and Shay Mitchell among her clients. Her must-haves include light jellies and creams that won’t weigh down fine waves.
“Curly and wavy hair types are naturally more dry, so hydration and moisture are essential,” she adds. But what elusive miracle products will give Type 2 hair the definition, hold, and hydration it needs, without compromising on volume? We’re glad you asked. Here’s a list of the top styling products for type 2 waves.
CREAM
1. Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream
Marjan swears by Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream because it’s “great for drier hair types that need extra moisture and definition.” This is one of my personal go-to’s, as well – I love that it’s infused with argan oil and smells amazing, too.
2. Cake Beauty Curl Defining Cream, The Curl Friend
As a reviewer with Type 2c hair says, “I would suggest this to anyone who is in need of a product that doesn’t create frizz and doesn’t make [my] hair sticky or crunchy!”
3. ELEVEN AUSTRALIA Keep My Curl Defining Cream
With a slightly-tacky, creamy texture, ELEVEN AUSTRALIA Keep My Curl Defining Cream is a must-try for any Wavies who want extreme hold and definition. This completely changed my hair when I first started using it in high school, and it’s still on rotation in my product lineup!
4. Not Your Mother’s Naturals Tahitian Gardenia Flower & Mango Butter Curl Defining Combing Cream
You won’t find any sulfates, silicones, phthalates, and parabens in Not Your Mother’s Naturals–but it’s what you will find inside that makes all the difference. Tahitian gardenia flower helps shape waves, while mango butter reduces frizz and adds shine.
5. AG Hair Re: Coil Curl Activator
AG Hair Re: Coil Curl Activator has five stars from the NaturallyCurly community – so you know it’s good. Need more convincing? One CurlTalk reviewer promises that with Re: Coil, “My hair is consistently and predictably curlier, softer, and relatively frizz-free.”
JELLY
6. OUAI Curl Defining Cream
Marjan always reaches for OUAI Curl Defining Cream (a cross between a cream and an oil) when she works with her celebrity clients. To get Insta-ready waves, she recommends “applying in sections for even distribution. If you are letting the hair air dry, make sure to avoid touching or scrunching the hair, as friction from our hands can cause frizz.”
7. Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls
Miss Jessie’s Jelly Soft Curls is a miracle in a tube. It manages to leave waves super-soft (AKA, no crunch whatsoever) while still defining their shape and holding it all in place.
GEL
8. Bread Beauty Hair Gel
Over on the Type 2 boards on CurlTalk, Bread Beauty Hair Gel gets a lot of love. User Guide 65 says, “It gives my hair definition like I’ve never seen it before! I have to be careful how much I use, because all that definition takes away from the volume. But I get day two hair that needs no refreshing.”
9. Curlsmith – In-Shower Style Fixer
If you prefer your haircare certified organic and all-natural, then you need to check out this alcohol-free styling gel from Curlsmith. It offers medium-to-firm hold, and ingredients that won’t harm your hair, all for under $30.
10. Rizos Curls Light Hold Gel
“My HG wave-defining products are hard-hold gels. I like the Rizos Curls light hold gel the best,” says Therese1, a Wavy who shares her feedback on Type 2 styling products on CurlTalk.
LEAVE-INS AND CONDITIONERS
11. DevaCurl One Condition Daily Cream Conditioner
Sometimes, wavies can get away with skipping stylers with the right conditioner – that conditioner is DevaCurl One Condition. “It’s so creamy, but it’s light enough for my fine hair,” says a CurlTalk community member.
12. Kinky-Curly Knot Today
Another CurlTalk favorite? Kinky-Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner. Users love that it keeps waves detangled and smooth, which is the first step towards a good hair day, right?
13. Love Beauty And Planet Argan Oil & Lavender Smooth & Serene Leave-In Smoothie Cream
Even though Love Beauty and Planet’s Leave-In Smoothie isn’t marketed towards waves or curls, I find it to be the best leave-in formula on the market. I don’t have to follow up with other stylers – I love simply smoothing this through my damp waves and going!
SPRAY
14. Living proof Style Lab Control Hairspray
LA-based hair stylist Helena Lambert opts for Living proof Style Lab Control Hairspray to lock in shape and shine. “If your hair type is frizzy, this will smooth any frizz,” she says.
15. TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray
Here’s how to get waves with more body and bounce, courtesy of Marjan: “Once the hair is completely dry, finish with TRESemmé Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray for volume.”
16. DESIGNME PUFF.ME Volumizing Dry Texture Spray
Lambert’s secret for “woke up like this” hair? “I’ll spritz DESIGNME PUFF.ME Volumizing Dry Texture Spray, scrunch the ends a bit, then gently twist it into a top knot. I leave it up for a bit, letting it semi-air dry. Then take it down and air dry it the rest of the way,” he says.
MASK
17. Gisou Honey Infused Hair Mask
The Gisou Honey Infused Hair Mask is the way to go for hair that needs some extra attention. Marjan says she often uses it on her clients to add moisture and hydration to dry, frizzy waves.
18. Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Hair Mask
You can deeply quench, nourish, and soften dry, damaged strands to get your hair back to looking healthy with these blends with creamy shea butter, rich coconut milk, and pure macadamia oil.
19. Amika soulfood Nourishing Mask
Wavies love this amazing, nourishing mask because it deeply conditions, hydrates and restores dry hair to its natural vibrancy and health with this replenishing treatment.
DIY TREATMENT
20. DIY Flaxseed Gel
If you’d rather whip up your own styler, try this combination from CurlTalk connoisseur BeinDeb: “I make [my DIY flaxseed gel] using a marshmallow root tea as the base, and add a pinch of honey and oil.”
Of course, you can’t rely on products alone for perfect waves. To get the most out of these stylers, make sure you’re not over-washing your waves or damaging them with your diffuser! What are your top styling products for type 2 waves? Share them with us in the comments below!

“I have thick, 2c/3a curly hair and am of Mediterranean origins. I struggle with getting the top of my head to curl, as it is pin-straight until about three inches down. From then on, it’s super curly. It is very unflattering and causes me to be hesitant to wear my hair naturally. I have tried layers, diffusing (even the upside-down version), and countless products. I am at a loss as to what to do, as I do not want to constantly have to wear my hair up. If anyone has dealt with this problem in the past or knows of a solution, please let me know.” — CurlTalk user nbarani
I know so many curly girls — including friends and family — who suffer from the same curly hair problem! they keep getting uneven curls.
Having gorgeous curls at the mid-length and ends of your hair is all good, but when the roots are flat, you have no volume or bounce and, often, no desire to embrace your curls with confidence.
This issue mainly affects curlies with looser, wavy textures which can find it difficult to fix uneven curly hair patterns. As type 2 and 3 hair grows longer, the weight of the hair can elongate curls, resulting in flatter roots. The good news is that there are some techniques that you can try to combat your uneven curls.
1. Clipping
Clipping is a technique I first encountered while reading “The Curly Girl Handbook.” It’s an incredible hack for creating volume up top without heat or harsh tools. Gather some Duck clips and grab your curls from the roots, and clip them upwards. This allows you to create the volume you want and then hold it in place with the clip while wet and covered with the product. Remove the clips once your hair is dry, and you will find your hair stays in the desired position — and you’ll no longer have flat roots!
2. Apply All the Way to the Root
If you have tried all the above options and still have no luck, London-based curly hair specialist Joleigh Wynter — trained by Lorraine Massey — has some tips.
“It is about getting hydration into that section, really getting the hair soaking wet. People tend to put products from mid-way down and are afraid to get near to the scalp,” she says. “I like to tip my head upside to apply products and take them quite close to my scalp — this will wake the curl at the root.”
3. Root Lifting
Using products formulated to lift the roots is a good place to start! Some great root-lifting products are curly hair friendly, like the Verb Curl Foaming Gel.
4. Pick It Out
Styling combs like the afro pick are amazing at creating a volume that isn’t naturally there! All hair types can use this method of combing the roots from the inside of the hair upwards and outwards to add more shape to the hair. This technique is best done while the hair is wet.
5. No Heavy Products
Heavy hair products naturally weigh your curls down, leading to dull roots. Less product will allow flexibility in the hair. I recommend trying out lighter leave-in conditioners or switching to a product that is water-based instead of heavier products like hair butter.

“What is my curl pattern?” is the most frequently asked question that naturalistas encounter when trying to identify their curl type. Social media is full of gorgeous pictures featuring different waves, coils, and curls that reflect different types of curls. First, I want to acknowledge that there isn’t a master curl pattern guide on the market that will give you all the answers. As the natural hair revolution has evolved, we’ve seen more blended textures across different curl patterns.
But there are foundational elements that any naturalista can keep in mind like lightweight products versus heavy products, but it is probably the least important factor in hair care. Other factors like porosity play a larger role in how you care for your hair than curl pattern. But if you are new to the curly community, or perhaps if you’ve been here a while and haven’t figured out this curl pattern stuff yet, then there are a few things that could be hindering the pursuit of your curl pattern.
1. You need to let your hair shrink
Stretched styles (e.g., twist out, braid out, etc.) will not give a proper representation of your curl pattern. Also, wet hair is not a proper depiction, as the water is weighing it down. After cleansing and deep conditioning, shingle a moisturizer and styling product throughout your hair with your fingers and allow your hair to shrink as it dries. Some say you can identify your curl pattern in its wet state, but a wet 4A can easily be mistaken as a dry 3C (we know curly hair struggles happening here), so a shrunken wash and go in its dried state is the most accurate way to make an assessment.
2. Stop combing your hair after you wash it
Put the comb down. There is nothing wrong with using a comb to detangle or even style, but combing separates your natural curl alignment/curl definition. The best way to observe your curl pattern is after it has been washed and not styled with tools. I know it is a natural tendency to comb your hair to style it, but this only disrupts the curl definition, making it harder to identify your curl pattern.
3. Heat damage
Let’s not be in denial. You mean to tell me that the leave out that you kept straightening to match your weave or extensions is 3B, but the rest of your hair is 4B? If you use heat tools frequently, then more times than not, that is why you cannot figure out your curl pattern. Give your hair a six-month break from heat styling. If the texture at the roots is different from the length of your hair, then you definitely have heat damage. Much like transitioning with relaxed hair, without cutting the damaged ends, it can be difficult to observe your true curl pattern due to the weight of the damaged hair.
4. Dryness
If your hair is dry, it is less likely to maintain curl definition. Make sure your regimen is centered on putting moisture into your hair. Most of the women I know who are able to capture their curl definition are avid about deep conditioning and sealing their hair with an oil or butter. If you are using a gel with drying alcohols instead of fatty alcohols, this could be another reason your hair is dry.
5. You’re still transitioning
Everyone thought they had the same hair as Tracee Ellis Ross until it was time to cut those relaxed ends. Oh, was it just me? Identifying your curl pattern while your hair is transitioning is quite difficult and not an accurate portrayal until you cut the relaxed ends. The weight matters. I remember when people would show me pictures of someone with a 4A, shoulder-length wash and go and say they were not going to big chop until they reached that length. My response would always be, “Well, I guess you are going to be transitioning for 3-5 years with no trims.” When transitioning, the best thing to focus on is moisturizing, deep conditioning, protein treatments, and low manipulation styles. Your curl pattern is completely irrelevant.
6. You’re focusing on frizz
Although looser curl patterns have a higher tendency to create and sustain curl definition, frizzy hair exists for every curl pattern. Frizzy hair does not automatically qualify you as 4C and curl definition does not automatically make you a 3B. I have seen frizz and definition across the board which is a universal curly hair struggle. Frizzy, 3B hair exists just like defined, 4C hair exists.
7. You do not have curl definition
There is a difference between someone whose hair does not clump versus someone who has frizz. If your hair does not clump into a consistent pattern while wet, then you do not have a natural curl definition, and that is fine. There is nothing wrong with your hair.
If your hair does have definition while wet, then you do have a curl pattern but your unique texture is just more prone to frizz without the proper moisturizing products, styling products, and techniques, and that is fine. There is nothing wrong with your hair. Remember, curl definers can only capture a curl, not create one. Learning how to master your wash-and-go takes time, and that still does not guarantee that frizz will be completely eliminated; it may only be reduced.
Some people never learn about their curl pattern and have an equally healthy hair care journey, so please do not fret. Knowing your curl pattern is not the be-all and end-all to having healthy hair.
Now that you have a better understanding of what to look for keep these in mind and take the curl pattern quiz.

What is hair density?
If you have been told, “Your hair is so thick!” your complimenter may actually have been alluding to hair density, not thickness. “Thick” hair technically refers to the width of a single strand of hair, whereas hair density refers to the number of strands on your head, and how closely those strands are packed together on your head.
So, if you want to know how to measure your hair density , we’ve outlined three ways of determining it with our hair density guide.
1. Count them
There are several ways to approach understanding the types of hair density that exist for naturalistas. One way is by actually counting the number of hairs on your head. The best way to do this is to count the number of hairs in one square inch of your scalp (or a half square inch), and then extrapolate from there.
On average, each person has approximately 2,200 strands of hair per square inch on their scalp, so counting can be a tedious task. But it is one option.
2. Can you see your scalp?
Alternatively, you can judge your hair density by taking a look at it in its natural state. This can vary between different textures and the types of hair density that occur between waves, curls, and coils. Start with dry hair, not wet, and do not part it—let it hang loose. Take a look in the mirror, can you see your scalp without moving any hair? If you can, you most likely have low hair density. If you can see your scalp with a little effort, then you will most likely have medium density. You have high hair density if it’s difficult or impossible to see your scalp.
3. Measure your ponytail
Another way to measure approximate density is to put your hair in a ponytail and measure the circumference of the ponytail or puff. Low-density hair will be less than two inches, Medium density will measure between two to three inches, and high density will be at least four inches. The width of your individual strands will also factor into the size of your ponytail.
Why does density matter?
Knowing your hair density will help you make smarter choices, not only in the styles you wear, but also with the products you use when putting together a healthy hair regimen. Using light products in low-density hair is helpful so as not to weigh hair down and make it look greasy or lifeless. Medium-density hair does well with light leave-ins and spray-in leave-in conditioners. Thicker gels and creams are usually ideal for high-density curly hair.
Using our hair density guide can also helps to identify what type of hairstyles and haircuts are best suited for you. If you already know your hair density, it’s easier to pick styles that suit you well. Understanding your density is critical to preventing disappointment when you bring photos into your hair stylist and the resulting cut doesn’t match your expectations – we’ve all been there!
Getting to know your hair density will help you identify curl crushes who have similar density and hair width and find haircuts that are going to work on your unique hair texture. For example, thicker hair tends to style more easily with longer layers, and thinner hair with blunt cuts.
Next time you head into the salon, talk to your stylist about your density and how that will affect your haircut and hair styling! Now that we’ve covered how to measure your hair density, check out: What Is My Hair Porosity?

Hi Curl Friends! You’ve decided to grow out your tapered haircut. Now what? The tapered haircut is the perfect option for curl friends looking for low maintenance while having some hair to style. However, when it’s time to grow out the haircut, the process can be long and painful.
I’m three months into my grow-out journey, and the most frustrating part has been growing out the sides and back. It’s taken some time, but I’ve finally figured out a few tips for growing out my short, bushy sides and laying my edges. I’m here to tell you that growing out a tapered haircut doesn’t have to be a long and painful process when you follow six steps to kick start your tapered haircut grow-out journey.
Having a planned strategy for growing out a tapered haircut will keep you away from the scissors and excited about growing a head full of healthy, long curls.
Establish A Healthy Hair Regimen
Establishing a healthy hair regimen is the first step to kick-starting growth. It doesn’t have to be complicated or take hours. The key steps to any naturalista’s regimen should include cleansing, conditioning, detangling, moisturizing, sealing, deep treatment, and styling. Consistently following these steps will cleanse your scalp and moisturize your curls, which catalyzes healthy long hair.
Get Your Hair In Shape
Now that you’ve established a healthy-hair regimen, it’s time to get in shape. Although you want to grow your sides and top to achieve a certain length, you still want to cut your hair for overall shape and health. There’s nothing worse than having split ends, breakage, and fairy knots crush your long hair dreams. Moreover, you’re less likely to hate your hair during the awkward stage if your hair has shape.
I actually got a full haircut at the start of my grow-out journey. Over the last three months, my hair has flourished, so much so that I need another haircut. Give your grow-out a kick-start by removing split ends and getting in shape. When you have a healthy and styled haircut, you will be less likely to dislike your hair at the start of your journey.
Create Inspiration
When we first create a goal, we start a vision board full of quotes, pictures, and other inspirational items to keep us focused on the goal. This should be no different when setting a hair goal. Head over to Pinterest and Instagram to create boards and save your favorite looks.
When you’re having impulses to cut your hair because your sides won’t lay smooth or your hair isn’t growing fast enough, you can refer to your inspiration to remind you of your grow out goals. Check out my personal Pinterest Grow Out Inspiration Board.
Try A Protective Style
One major downside to growing out a tapered haircut is not having an option for bad hair days. If your hair is not “done,” or you miss a wash day, your hair just won’t look good. There’s no high puff or slick back ponytails. However, you can incorporate protective styles to get you through bad hair days.
You can try clip-ins, wigs, box braids, crochet braids, knotless braids, and more depending on your length. Protective styles are an excellent option to add versatility and low hair manipulation and provide you a break from growing out your hair.
Invest In Hair Accessories & Tools
My biggest frustration has been growing my sides out. Three months ago, my sides were smooth and laid. Now, they are curly and bushy and require quite a bit of maintenance to look neat. If you’re like me, you won’t have the time or, quite frankly, you won’t want to style your sides every day. If this is the case, you must stock up on headwraps, turbans, hats, hair clips, and other hair accessories.

Shop head wraps and turbans: Curlfriend Collective, YGN T-shirt Turban, Kitsch, and Scunci
Shop hats: Grace Eleyae and Yanibest
Patience, Patience, and More Patience
Having patience during a grow-out is easier said than done. We all wish we can snap our fingers and wake up with long hair, however, we know that’s not how the process goes. On average, your hair will grow ½ inch per month or about six inches per year.
It’s important to understand that starting a grow-out process will take time. Having this perspective will save you a lot of frustration when you don’t see or think your hair is growing fast enough. So sit back, relax, and trust the process!
Growing out a tapered haircut doesn’t have to be a long and painful process when you follow six steps to kick start your tapered haircut grow-out journey. Having a planned strategy will keep you away from the scissors and excited about growing a head full of healthy, long curls.

As the humidity rises in many areas of the country – including here in NaturallyCurly’s home in Austin, TX – I usually reach for my trusty can of hairspray to set my curls and ward off the frizz that can set in as the day progresses.
But like many curlies, sometimes I want an alternative to hairspray. Many curlies don’t like the feel or the smell of hairspray. Don’t despair! When you are looking for non-hairspray options that give you the hold of hairspray, there are several good options. Here are some of my favorites.
1. Turn to Texturizing Spray
A texturizer spray won’t give you the same hold as a high-hold hairspray, but if you are looking for a lighter hold or just a way to set your style while adding some extra texture, this is the best answer without hairspray. This lightweight choice will leave hair less weighed down than your typical hairspray while still giving you a little control. Some good ones to try are UNITE Hair TEXTURIZA Spray, Cake Beauty Big Wig Dry Texturizing Spray, and Kristin Ess Hair Dry Finish Working Texture Hair Spray.
2. Try Dry Shampoo
Another one of the best alternatives to hairspray is dry shampoo. This works because it removes excess oils, which may keep hair closer to the scalp at the roots. Rootes are given an instant boost by eliminating the extra oil, similar to applying hairspray. With this method, just be careful not to overdo it since it can lead to dryness if used daily. And make sure you find one that works with your hair color. Some brands can leave a light/white cast on dark hair. Some to try include MONDAY HAIRCARE Dry Shampoo, Briogeo Scalp Revival Dry Shampoo Powder, and Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Dark Tones.
3. Use a Sugar Spray
Another way to get an impressive hold without the hassle or crunch of hairspray is probably already in your pantry. Sugar cane extract has curl enhancing capabilities, as well as hold. When used directly on the scalp, it can also unclog pores and act as a clarifying treatment to exfoliate and promote hair growth. Sugar is known to give some hold without making hair too hard. It is also a really easy DIY approach that only requires two ingredients.
4. Use a little Shea Butter
Shea butter may be one of the most beloved ingredients for curly girls around the world. However, one attribute that may not get as much attention is its ability to provide a decent amount of hold for your curls when used as a pomade to avoid hairspray.
Simply rub some pure shea butter between your hands before applying it to your hair. This will give some hold while also offering hydration for thirsty strands. Some great shea butter options exist: REAL African Shea Butter Pure Raw, RA COSMETICS Whipped Shea Butter Mango, and Blue Magic Shea Butter.
5. Pomade in heaven
Many people are confused about hair pomade, one of those styling products. Contrary to popular belief, it’s available in different holds, finishes, and textures. Pomades of the past were usually beeswax or petroleum-based for heavy styling. Although newer editions may contain traces of both wax and petroleum, other additives create a smoother, lighter finish.
To set your curls, rub a little pomade between your palms, pull your hair back like you’re making a ponytail or bun, and twist it. When you let it go, your curls should be more defined, and the pomade will add hold to keep them looking good throughout the day.
If your hair does start to look frizzy, just redo the process. Some good pomades to try include Maui Moisture Lightweight Curls + Flaxseed Edge Control, Carol’s Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey Shine Pomade, and Cantu for Men Cream Pomade Flex Hold.

Spooky Season is upon us, and if you haven’t figured out the perfect creative Halloween costume that will leave your friends wishing they had thought of it first, we’ve got your back. We are bringing you 20 meme-inspired Halloween costumes that anyone can do.
Memes objectively make great Halloween costumes. Depending on your personal flavor of niche internet subculture, there is a unique, nostalgic, relatable, and hilarious meme costume calling your name. We did our best to include some of the easiest-to-achieve meme costumes, recognizable meme content (e.g., Florence Pugh and her Aperol Spritz), and older and ever-relatable meme content (e.g., Jay Z drinking wine in a durag).
So let’s keep it fun and not problematic this Halloween with these 20 meme-inspired costumes!

What you need for this costume:
Your costume will be determined by who you deem the “winner.” But if you want to with the consensus of the population, you can sport a red hoodie from Kendrick Lamar’s famous “Not Like Us” performance.

6. Florence Pugh and her Aperol Spritz
Source: @FPDMedia
This meme involves Florence Pugh walking into the premiere of “Don’t Worry Darling” at the Cannes Film Festival, notably unbothered by the chaos and drama surrounding the film. 7. Bratz Doll with Wild Hair
Source: @betchesluvthis
This Bratz doll had a wild night, or took a very long nap, or maybe she just forgot to wrap her hair last night. Nevertheless, the internet had a lot of fun conjuring up ideas about what led to the infamous photo where her makeup remained perfectly intact but her hair looked like she got electrocuted.
What you need for this costume:
All you need to achieve this look is a full face of makeup, a pink scrunchy, and to put your hair up in the messiest way possible.
8. Ice Spice
You thought I was feeling you?? *laughs hard, cries harder*
After going viral as a TikTok sound, the phrase “You thought I was feeling you?” trended on Twitter and was referenced all over the internet. The song and phrase’s popularity is partly due to Spice’s distinct red afro and the catchy Instagram caption lyrics.
What you need for this costume:
For this outfit, all you really need is a red afro and a little bit of spite.
9. Arthur Fist

For this costume, you can partner with your favorite friend or wear a red and white jumpsuit or pantsuit.
12. Ben Affleck and his Dunkin Donuts coffee
Source: @summeramorris_
Over the years, Ben Affleck has become well known for his taste for Dunkin Donuts, so this costume has options. My favorite rendition of the Ben Affleck meme is the one where he is carrying several packages with a large iced coffee on top, but Ben carrying several iced coffees wearing a Believe in Boston tee is a close second. You can also make this a two-person costume by adding J.Lo joining Ben for Dunkin.
What you need for this costume:
For this outfit, you’ll need a love of iced coffee, a slightly unkempt beard, and a nice local boy next door, a Boston fit.
13. I Love New York
New York, also known as Tiffany Pollard, is a reality star that we will never forget. Her hilarious antics on “The Flavor of Love” and her spin-off “I Love New York” not only made for great reality TV content, but she also gave us some of the most relatable meme content of all time.
What you need for this costume:
For this costume, you need a white tank top, pink-tinted sunglasses, black leggings or jeans, a pillow to lean against, and to cross your arms and look straight forward like you’re waiting on that “we outside” text from your friends.
14. Carmy in the Kitchen from “The Bear”
Source: @Wendys
Suppose you’re interested in TV Twitter at all. In that case, you’ve probably heard of The Bear Hulu and/or seen the hilarious tweets about people who can’t really cook using a photo of Jeremy Allen White as Carmy in the kitchen.
What you need for this costume:
You can rock the Carmy look with a fitted white T-shirt, blue apron, fake (or real) arm tats, and a silver utensil.
15. Jay Z drinking wine
Source: @JAY_Z_Daily
What you need for this costume:
Grey sweatpants + black durag + red wine = a regular Friday night in your 30s and also a great costume idea. You can’t miss this classic.
16. Will Byers Crying Meme
Arguably one of the most viral memes of 2022 so far, Will Byers’s crying in the car meme will be just recognizable enough with a side-by-side photo even if you haven’t seen the latest season of Stranger Things.
What you need for this costume:
The most important parts of this meme are the bowl-cut wig and plaid shirt. Anything else is just toppings.
17. Evil Kermit
Source: @auntricebag
“Hooded Kermit,” also known as “Evil Kermit,” points to our innermost demons or naughty thoughts. This is one of my favorite memes on the entire list because there are so many relatable versions. It’s like we all have the same inner demons!
What you need for this costume:
For this costume, you need a green bodysuit or frog costume, frog eyeglasses, and a black hoodie for evil Kermit. It could also work as a two-person costume.
18. Snoop Dogg at the Paris Olympics

What you need for this costume:
This is pretty simple; you just need a pair of blue sweatpants and a crop top or the baby tee that puts your hips front and center.
20. Old man from squid games
Source: @kianatipton
There are Squid Games costumes you can easily find online, but you can really take your costume to the next level by turning it into this hilarious meme featuring player number 001, Oh Il-Nam. This meme compares joy and despair, often in the form of “before” and “after.”
What you need for this costume:
You can find tons of new and pre-worn costumes online. Just make sure you look for one Oh Il-Nam’s number, 001. You can also get some white mask tape to cover the number and use a Sharpie to write 001.

Flax seed gels are a godsend for many curly girls, creating defined curls with significant hold. Flax seed has unique benefits. If you didn’t know, flax seed is an extremely nutrient-dense superfood that can help with elasticity, strength, repair, and growth.
You can benefit from this seed in several ways, whether through oils or by consuming it in your diet. You can easily make a DIY Flax Seed Gel at home to reap the benefits whenever you like. This DIY Flax Seed Gel recipe will leave your curls fluffy, soft, and flake-free. Not to mention, it smells amazing.
Okay, okay. I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘not another DIY hair gel tutorial…’ but I promise you, I’ve got one to show you how to make one of the best flaxseed gels at home.
Here’s just a sampling of community reviews for this recipe:
- I made a batch and tried it today, and it beats all the overpriced products I have invested $$$ in thus far. I have very dry and frizzy 3c hair, and this product gives me a definition with good hold. Once your hair is dry, you scrunch a few times, and the slight crunch is gone.
- I’ve used this gel recipe for years. I like to add glycerin (a humectant) and macadamia nut oil because these ingredients give my curls shine and body.
- My hair is never gooky, no matter how much gel I use.
- I live in Miami and love using this in my hair. Depending on my workouts, I use it once or twice a week.
What you’ll need:
- Water
- Flaxseeds
- A pot
- Pantyhose or a stocking
- A jar with a lid
- Essential oils like rosemary, tea tree, or lavender
- Scented oil such as jasmine
1. Mix the quarter cup of flax seeds with two cups of water and heat in a small pot until it comes to a boil. Remember to stir often to ensure that the seeds don’t stick to the bottom.
2. After a few minutes, you will notice the water beginning to form a slick gel cast — just barely, though. Keep an eye on the mix while it’s on the stove because the higher the heat, the faster it will thicken. We want the consistency to be just right — not too thin and liquidy, not too thick and pasty.
3. When the water comes to a boil, the foamy froth will rise to the top, along with what looks like mucus from the flax seed. You can then lower the heat and prepare a strainer. The easiest trick and common way to get the most gel from the flax seed without burning yourself while still saving the seeds — yes, they are reusable — is with a stocking. I took a clean mason jar and covered the opening with pantyhose or stocking. Just make sure it is new or clean. I poured the contents from the pot into the mason jar, and the stocking captured all of the flax seeds.
4. Once most of the liquid or gel is in the jar, take some tongs to gently squeeze out whatever else you can get from the flax seeds. It might be a little tricky to get the gel to ooze out of the stocking depending on how thick your gel is (again, that all depends on how long you left it on the stove) but try your best to get as much gel as possible. After squeezing out the gel, flip your stocking inside out and collect the flax seeds to store for the next use.
5. At this point, you have two options: You can either cover the jar and store it in the fridge until you are ready to use it, OR you can add a few extra things to really give your gel some kick and maybe even make it last a little longer. I added about a teaspoon of vitamin E oil, which helps to preserve the gel and make it last about three weeks as opposed to one or two.
Vitamin E oil is also beneficial because it helps to repair and build tissue due to its antioxidant properties. My vitamin E oil came straight from a few capsules that I punctured and squeezed. I added a few drops of rosemary, tea tree, and lavender oils, which are all great for hair health because they can stimulate hair growth. Hair gel that makes your hair healthier? Yes, please! And finally, because I prefer a softer scent, I added a few extra drops of my favorite-smelling oil, jasmine. You can add drops of any scented oil you care to.
6. After mixing thoroughly, store your gel in the fridge. Cooling the gel will allow the mix to thicken a bit and form a more goo-like consistency.
My results after using DIY flax seed gel for definition.
Why is this DIY gel better than all others?
Here are my thoughts on hair gels in general compared to this particular gel:
It’s alcohol-free
I’m not really a fan of other gels because most of them contain alcohol, some of which can dry out my curls. I don’t like that most gels harden my hair to the point where my hair looks ashy and begins to flake as soon as I start to scrunch and release the cast. Even after scrunching, my curls still don’t feel as soft and fluffy as I like. However, with this gel, I get all of the opposite effects.
It’s flake-free
My hair feels incredibly soft and there is absolutely no flaking. One thing I will say is that while this gel feels slimy and slippery to the touch, it doesn’t actually have a lot of slip in the hair (then again, what gel does?) so I would recommend using a leave-in conditioner first to help detangle the curls and make applying the gel a lot easier.
It’s not sticky
After scrunching, you will notice that your hands don’t feel sticky after using this gel. And guess what? Since this hair gel doesn’t contain any alcohol, it won’t dry out your curls either. Now, this gel doesn’t really give me the definition that I usually love, but throughout the day, my hair looks fuller and more voluminous without the frizz.
Watch my step-by-step tutorial here:
If you haven’t tried making your own hair gel before and are curious, definitely give this one a try. I feel confident that you’re going to like it. We recently interviewed Bomb Ass Fro founder Sydni Raymond who shared how she created a viral hair out of flax seed.
Have you ever tried a DIY flaxseed gel before? If so, what was your experience like? Share in the comments section below, and let us know if you included any oils!

If you have wavy hair, you know the struggle of creating volume. For some, volume may come naturally. For some of us, however, volume can seem like a unicorn or elusive fairytale land always out of reach.
It doesn’t have to be this way! With our six tips on how to boost your volume with wavy hair, you can reach the heights you’ve always dreamed of in no time!
1. Get a Curly Cut
Wavy hair, especially long wavy hair, has a tendency to get weighed down and lose its curl. No amount of scrunching can fix a shapeless cut, so if you are struggling to achieve volume, then seek out a curly-cut stylist who can help shape your hair in a way that encourages your waves, not inhibits them.
Every hair type is different, so if your hair is extra fine (meaning the individual strands are not wide) or your hair is low density (meaning it is easy to see your scalp) then your cut will be different from someone whose hair is high density or thick.
If you haven’t found a stylist you like, here are 50 Natural Hair Stylists to Follow Who Specialize in Textured Hair.
2. Plop
When your hair is wet, it is weighed down at the roots. If you allow your hair to dry this way then you’re likely to experience flatness, so one way to avoid the wet dog look is by plopping. Plopping is a curly girl technique in which you accordion your curls and waves into a t-shirt or microfiber towel and tie it on top of your head to partially dry. You can see step-by-step instructions on how to plop here. For many wavies and curlies this is a crucial step in their wash day routine.
3. Dry Upside Down
If you don’t have time to air dry, then we recommend speeding up the process with a diffuser. When diffusing your hair, bring the diffuser from the ends up towards your roots so that the air is blowing up and not down. Flip your head upside down and diffuse the roots while inverted for even more volume. This will help raise the roots. When you blow down, you are crushing your roots back down to stay flat on your head.
4. Raise Your Roots With Root Lifter.
Of course, you can always cheat a little with a great product designed to raise your roots. Some examples are COLOR WOW Raise the Root Thicken + Lift Spray, Moroccanoil Root Boost, and amika Brooklyn Bombshell Blowout Volume Spray.
5. Try O-Clipping
O-clipping is a method of lifting your roots with duckbill clips while they’re wet, and allowing them to dry this way. The ‘O’ symbolizes the shape you make with your arm when you insert the clip at the root. Stylist Brianne Prince shared a fantastic tutorial for how she O-clips for volume here. If O-clipping doesn’t work for you, you could also try her genius chopstick hack, which she calls “Curl Kebabs.”
6. Avoid Build-Up and Calcification
Tying in with dry shampoo, if your scalp has a lot of build-up, it will naturally make hair seem flat. Make sure you are paying attention to buildup. If your scalp feels extra oily, consider a clarifying treatment as needed. A few great products for this include Jessicurl, Clarifying Shampoo, Bounce Curl Enzyme Gentle Clarifying Shampoo, and Mixed Chicks Gentle Clarifying Shampoo.

Every curly girl knows that a shower can do wonders for your hair. It can re-define curls, give hair much needed moisture, help with damage control—the list goes on and on.
While most of us are trained to shower first and style second, there might be a better way to give our curls what they need to look and feel their best. I know the struggle of waking up with barely enough time to detangle, wash, and style your hair and make it to work on time. But I’ve come to find that styling in the shower helps.
After a few rushed mornings, I’ve found that styling in the shower does more than just save time. Here are three reasons why I style my hair in the shower:
1. Prevent damage from brushing
Some curly girls like to detangle their hair before hopping in the shower. Brushing out curly hair when it’s dry can lead to serious breakage, especially if it’s been a few days since your last wash. Even with a wide-toothed comb and all the best techniques, you can snap your dry curls, leaving you with frizzy locks.
When you brush your hair out in the shower, you can save your hair from this type of breakage. Get your curls soaking wet and douse them with conditioner. The curls on the back of your head are extra tangled and frizzy, so don’t skimp out. Let your whole head soak in water and conditioner for a few minutes to loosen up knots and break down stubborn frizz. By doing this, you will have an easier and less painful session brushing out your locks.
And remember, always, always, always brush from the bottom, up! Starting with your comb at the top of your hair and working your way down will just push all of the knots together, creating one big super-knot that you’ll have to work on for hours to detangle.
Work your way up from the bottom to eliminate knots in the fastest and safest way.
2. Give your curls extra hydration
Curls crave one thing—moisture. Where do they get the most moisture from? The shower.
By harnessing the moisture of a shower, you can give your curls even more hydration to make them extra bouncy, defined, and luxurious.
Your hair starts to dry the minute you step out of the shower. When you wait to style your hair until after you’ve gotten your makeup and clothes on, your hair has already lost much of the moisture it received from the shower. Your curls will be less defined and more likely to frizz. Sealing the cuticle with the product before leaving the shower will help you retain all of that amazing hydration you just received from the shower.
3. Your products will work better
Many products made for curly hair, are designed to work their best when hair is soaking (and we mean dripping) wet. When curls are wet, they are at their peak. They’re fully defined and loaded with moisture. The cuticle of the hair is open and ready to cling onto anything to help it stay in that state. You will get better results by closing the cuticle with products specifically made for curly hair. Your curls will be less frizzy, more defined, and will hold for longer.

Styling in the shower might be a new venture for you. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably had the same curly hair routine for months, if not years. Try breaking out of that habit and styling your hair in the shower tomorrow morning. You’ll notice a difference in how your curls look and feel throughout the day. They’ll be less frizzy, more defined, and even with using the same products, it will feel as if you’re using something totally new.
Do you style in the shower? If so, what tips can you recommend to a fellow curly girl who’s thinking of making the switch?

What is the difference in the look and feel of a well-groomed beard versus a neglected beard?
Beardbrand: “For longer beards, a well-groomed beard will be trimmed to an even length. The cheeks and neckline will also have straight lines. A well-groomed beard will likely be blown dry, and oils and balms will be used to ensure it looks its best. A neglected beard will have many split ends, be uneven, and not be trimmed regularly. It will also appear to be a “bed head” where it is pushed to the side. For shorter beards, more personal style is involved where some guys want the natural cheek lines to have a more rugged look.”
Black Label Beard: “Neglected beards will feel itchy, scratchy, dry, and look wiry. Well-kept beards will look clean and straight and will grow from being well moisturized and healthy.”
Craft Culture Co.: “A well-groomed beard firstly has boundaries. It doesn’t grow all over the cheeks, down the throat, and around the back of the neck. The beard can start just around the Adam’s apple or at the crease of the neck. Consider how it has a defined boundary on the cheeks, coming down from the sideburns to meet the mustache. We love to see a beard that sits on the jaw and doesn’t spread backward towards the neck hair. It never merges into neck hair!

A well-groomed beard also has a shape – it doesn’t grow wildly in all directions. Usually, it is flatter on the sides of the cheeks, but it is a bit longer on the chin and mustache. If you have a curly beard, it’ll still be curly, but the curls will be more uniform rather than having some appear longer than others. A well-groomed beard also has a softness and a bit of natural shine – helped by beard oil – and lies fairly neatly, as it has been brushed through.”
Beard Maintenance
What kind of maintenance is required, and how often? Combing, cleansing, moisturizing, cutting/trimming, etc.?
Beardbrand: “We recommend guys wash their beards once or twice a week and always follow up with a softener or conditioner. For the best-looking beard, I’d recommend applying daily beard oil, combing out any knots, and brushing the beard with a boar’s hair brush when it has dried. For a maintained look, a guy will want to trim about 1/2” off his beard once a month.”
Craft Culture Co.: “Every couple of days, wash your beard thoroughly to clean the skin beneath the hairs and the hairs themselves. Use a shampoo and conditioner that’s created just for your beard. As mentioned, don’t use the same shampoo that you would use on your head hair, as it’s too harsh.
For a well-groomed look, buy a nice beard trimmer and use it at least once a week. Figure out which setting on the trimmer meets your desired length, and make sure to trim your entire beard frequently. A pair of scissors and a comb can also do the trick. Trim mustache hairs that fall over the lip or train them to the side with a little bit of mustache wax.
Buy a nice shave oil that you can use with a straight razor or edger to clean up the border between your beard and the hairless part of your face. It’ll help make the lines look cleaner and will help to prevent razor burn from occurring.
Comb your beard once a day, only for a few minutes. Buy a nice fine-tooth comb; for a curly, coarse beard, this will help remove knots and make it appear smoother. A natural bristle brush can be used for longer beards, but regular combing stimulates healthy hair growth, whichever way you prefer.
Buy a good beard oil or balm that you can apply to your beard, either when you comb it or afterwards. Rub a few drops in your hands and apply all over and behind your beard—and in the case of beard oil, be sure to massage all the way to the roots and skin. Your hair will thank you.”
What is the difference between razor bumps and ingrown hairs? How do you remove and prevent them?
Craft Culture Co.: “Razor bumps occur when the hair growing above the skin loops around and reenters the skin where it becomes trapped. Ingrown hairs on the other hand never grow above the skin, instead remaining trapped under the skin. Ingrown hairs can occur when the shave is done too close to the skin or even cut below the skin.
To prevent this, you shouldn’t overstretch the skin when shaving and should try to make sure that your multi-blade razor, if you use one, is clean. Razor bumps occur partly due to one’s natural hair type. The shape of extremely curly hair can cause it to re-penetrate the skin. If you shave closely, the sharp ends of the remaining hairs can be extremely sharp and pointy, making it easier for them to reenter the skin when they curl.

For an immediate solution to ingrown hairs and razor bumps, apply a hot towel to open the pores, then gently break the skin’s surface with tweezers or a sterilized needle to get the hair to the surface. Resist the temptation to remove the hair altogether. To prevent them from recurring, exfoliate your skin gently once or twice per week to discourage the skin from growing over the hairs.
When shaving, always glide the blade in the direction of the hair on the first pass. If necessary, stop shaving so close for a while, as doing so risks aggravating your skin further. A trimmer or clippers can trim your facial hair to 1/8 in. above the skin and maybe a better solution for those often troubled by ingrown hairs or razor bumps.

Practice good hygiene with your grooming tools by keeping them separate from others’ equipment and cleaning them of germs and rust. To combat infection try an alcohol-based toner on your skin. Dab it on a cotton ball and gently wipe it on the areas where you’re experiencing razor bumps or ingrown hairs. Do this after you have already cleaned your face at least twice a day.
Ingrown hairs and razor bumps will heal over time without the need to actually extract the hairs. However, if they persist, you should contact a dermatologist.”
Common Mistakes When Shaving
Craft Culture Co.: “There are many mistakes commonly made when shaving. Here are some of the most frequent to be avoided:
- Using an old blade- This blade will irritate your skin and cause some damage.
- Not using the correct aftershave—Use a light aftershave with natural ingredients such as tea tree oil. You should also use an aftershave with hydrating properties.
- Do not let the shaving cream soften your skin. Don’t shave right away once you put the shaving cream on your skin. Leave it there for a few minutes so that your skin can become moisturized and softened.
- Shaving before a shower -The best time to shave is right after a shower, when your hair is the most moistened. This will make the hair easier to shave and reduce irritability.
- Shaving with cold skin—If you take cold showers or shave without showering, be sure to warm your skin with hot water first. Shaving cold skin increases the likelihood of cutting into your hair follicles, giving rise to what we call a blood spot. Also, it’s more likely to irritate the skin generally.
- Not lubricating properly—Using a shaving product that dries too quickly will result in poor lubrication and more scraping and damage to the skin. Preparing your skin before shaving with a pre-shave oil and using a rich shaving cream will provide all the lubrication you need for a comfortable shave.

- Shaving too often – Occasionally take a week off from shaving. Use a trimmer instead if you have to. Your skin needs a break and constant close shaves will strip your skin of its natural oils and protection layer.
- Shaving against the grain, especially on the neck –Not observing the natural growth patterns of the beard, particularly on the neck, and shaving against the grain on the first pass often results in irritation.
- Pressing too hard with the razor blade –This will scrape layers away from your skin, evidenced by pain, cuts, and redness. Don’t be in a hurry, but allow your razor to glide gently over your face.
- Exfoliating your skin after shaving – If you use an exfoliating lotion everyday, don’t do it right after you have shaved. Your skin already has been through trauma and rubbing it will make it more irritated.”

With natural hair, it’s hard not to think constantly of your curls and coils—how moisturized they are, how defined they are, how to style them, and more. But there’s another part of your hair that needs equal attention and that you may sometimes neglect: your edges.
What causes thinning edges?
Excessive styling and bad styling habits can strain your edges, thinning them over time. Other reasons for hair loss (at the edges and beyond) can include pregnancy, stress, heredity, hypothyroidism, chronic illnesses like lupus, and scalp conditions, according to Prevention. The most common type of hair loss is hereditary, affecting around 80 million men and women across America.
Some people have gotten their “edges snatched” – but not in a good way, and it’s time to get them back! Here are some tips if you’ve run into snags trying to regrow your edges.
How to prevent thinning edges
1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!
Natural oils like castor oil and coconut oil are useful in keeping edges moisturized and stimulating growth. Castor oil lubricates the hair shaft, which can reduce breakage, dandruff, and flaking. Coconut oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties, which can improve scalp health and support hair growth.
Creating oil mixtures and treatments will more deeply moisturize your edges and fight against hair loss. Try applying Alikay Naturals Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil or combining it with coconut oil and castor oil in a small bowl and microwaving for a few seconds. Apply to your edges at night and watch your hair grow!
2. Avoid high manipulation styling

Braids and twists can be cute for those summer Instagram shots, but be wary of these styles if you have issues regrowing your edges. Tight protective styles cause tension and pull on your scalp, increasing the likelihood that your edges will break off. Also, constantly pulling your hair back into buns and ponytails can have the same growth-stunting effect. Keeping away from tight styles gives your scalp a rest and allows your edges the freedom to grow without restraint.
3. Hard brushes at the edges are a no-no
Scrolling through TikTok, we often see our favorite naturalistas slicking their edges down to add to final touches to their hairstyles. But constant manipulation of your edges with hard bristles brushes and edge control gel can prevent your edges from growing back. If you’re trying to grow your edges, let them grow naturally without being forced down. You can try any of your regular styles with free, unlaid edges—saving you more time in the end!
4. Satin and silk are your best friends
For girls with curly, kinky, and coily hair, we already know silk and satin can be life savers when protecting our curls at night—but they can help with our edges, too! Sleeping on cotton pillowcases can cause friction that sucks the moisture out of your edges—this will undo the benefits of any extra nourishment you’ve added with oils! Along with a satin pillowcase, you can tie a silk scarf around your edges to keep them protected at night. Just make sure you don’t tie the scarf down too tight.

Good news, curly girls! It’s safe to go back in the water. That is, once you accept your hair’s natural texture!
If you’ve ever been a blow-dry/flat-iron-straight girl, you know that swimming is off the agenda. If you go in the water, your straight hair reveals its natural shape, and even being near the water – like at the beach or at a steamy indoor pool – can ruin a blow-out in no time flat.

Once you go curly, however, you can enjoy the water like never before. Just follow these simple tips and you’ll be good to go!
1. Chlorine is Good for Pools But Can Be Very Drying For Curls
Chlorine isn’t good for any hair type, but it’s even worse for curly hair because curls are naturally drier than straight or wavy tresses. Before going in the pool, slather your hair (wet or dry) with a rich conditioner. Curly hair is porous, and the conditioner fills those holes before the chlorine can seep in.

Next, slip on a bathing cap. Besides being protective, you’ll also be giving yourself a deep moisturizing treatment thanks to the heat generated by the cap and the conditioner. Not only will you have hydrated curls, but frizz will disappear, too!
2. Use Products From Your Kitchen!
Apply extra virgin olive oil to your hands and then slick it on your hair downward. You can also put the oil in a spray bottle and spritz it on your curls. “Because oil and water don’t mix, the oil will repel the chlorinated water,” explains Lorraine Massey, author of “Curly Girl: The Handbook.”
3. At tThe Beach, Salt Water Can Dehydrate Your Curls, As Can the Salty Ocean Air
If you don’t want to don a bathing cap and conditioner, then at least spritz hair with a leave-in conditioner often or combine equal parts conditioner and water in a spray bottle to create your own.
5. Don’t Forget Post-Swim Care
It’s important to wash your hair IMMEDIATELY with a sulfate-free cleanser or conditioner to remove any drying chlorine or salt water.
Follow these tips, and you and your curls will be basking in the sun and water all summer long!

Everyone talks about catching up on beauty sleep, but it can be hard to follow through. When we get a solid night of rest, we often wake up with a messy curls. With so many activities competing for valuable morning time (e.g., breakfast, getting dressed, Instagram, etc.), caring for our hair sometimes gets overlooked.
The flat iron is damaging. Washing takes too long. A brush is not an option for textured hair. So what’s a curly-haired girl to do? I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way. You can go to bed and wake up with fabulous hair.
Read on for the top five tips to help you transition from waking up frustrated with your ‘do to waking up with a nearly ready-to-go look.
Pineapple
The go-to overnight curl protector is the pineapple. To pineapple means to loosely tie your curls into a ponytail atop the crown of your head with a scrunchie or headband, depending on how thick your hair is. It should look like a pineapple, get it? This style protects your curls from being squashed while you toss and turn in a deep slumber. And since this ‘do lifts the hair’s roots, you’ll wake up with plenty of volume.
Simply pull your hair through a scrunchie, but don’t double-wrap it. Tying too tightly can create a crease in the curls. For extra protection, you can tie a silk or satin scarf around your head to keep your hair from rubbing on your pillow.
Satin Bonnet
Can’t keep split ends at bay? Wear a satin bonnet to protect your ends from the friction of your pajamas and your bedding. It may not be the sexiest thing to wear to bed, but at least you can avoid scheduling a trim every other month. Speaking of beauty sleep, if you suspect that bacteria from your curls is causing acne on your face or back, a satin bonnet will prevent excess sebum, debris, and hair products from clogging your pores when your hair rubs against your face and shoulders while you sleep.
Are bonnets not your style? Well, the hooded scarves from Ebonicurls are designed to be worn to sleep and with your casual wear!
Satin Pillowcase
Cotton pillowcases absorb the moisture from your hair, leaving your curls dry, frizzy, and undefined. A satin pillowcase will allow you to sleep with your hair loose without parched or frizzy strands greeting you first thing in the morning. This is another great option for women who aren’t crazy about donning a hair bonnet. If you don’t mind sleeping with your hair loose, a satin pillowcase is a quick fix that won’t require additional steps to your night or morning hair routine.
French Braid
If you love the curling wand but hate the damage it causes, try sleeping with one, two, or three French braids! This style creates body waves while protecting your hair from rubbing against your clothes and sheets, resulting in dryness and breakage. All you have to do is set your hair with a little hairspray (we like Curlsmith’s Flawless Finish Flexible Hold) and then braid before bed. Simply release your braids in the morning and go! Minimal fuss the night before and no fuss the next morning.
Two-Strand Twist
If you don’t know how to braid, a two-strand twist is about as simple as it gets. Simply take a small section of hair, divide it into two, and twist the two pieces around each other from roots to ends. This technique works best for tighter curl patterns. Two-strand twists can be done on either wet or dry hair. Apply your favorite styler or sealing product if your hair is wet before you twist. If your hair is dry, spray a light mist of water or a refresher spray before you twist. Avoid using too much product as it can lead to buildup.
The key to waking up with bouncy, ready-to-go morning hair is all in the prep. As you scramble to get out the door to work, the only thing you’ll need to do is lightly fluff your hair and apply a refresher spray, such as Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Curl Refresher Spray for Curls, Coils and Waves, with Agave.
Find a nightly routine that suits your lifestyle to preserve your curls throughout the week. As an added benefit, you won’t have to wash and restyle your hair as often, which can strip your hair and cause breakage. Say goodbye to split ends, frizz, and leaving the house with wet hair. Say hello to moisturized, dry, and healthy hair, ready to walk out the door.
When it comes to packing for a flight, those of us with curly hair are faced with the dilemma of downsizing our multiple-product regimens. While it may seem like a daunting task, following TSA regulations when packing for flights can allow for a simplified packing list, and more room for clothes and souvenirs!
These are our top tips for air travel beauty.
How to pack for air travel
1. Zip Top Bags
TSA suggests that you prepare for packing by placing all liquids in a clear bag with a zip top. This could be something as simple and cheap as a large Ziploc bag, or you can easily find TSA-approved bags made of sturdier plastic for under $10.00. These bags will prevent spills and can be quickly wiped down if necessary.
2. Travel Kits
Many hair product travel kits are designed perfectly for curlies! The Rizos Curls travel kit offers a shampoo, conditioner, curl cream, and their popular Refresh spray line. It even comes in a TSA-friendly clear zip top bag!
DevaCurl offers a great set that includes a conditioning cleanser, a conditioner, a defining gel, and a styling cream.
The Uncle Funky’s Daughter set includes five more “snack-size” products for kinkier textures: a conditioner, a leave-in spray, supercurl, extra butter, curl stimulator, and refresh spray. This kit also comes in a clear zip-top bag.
3. Solid shampoo
Opt for a solid shampoo to simplify your packing further and completely bypass liquid regulations!
For type 3 and 4 hair, the NaturallyCurly editors recommend As I Am and Pure Rootss! Both are ultra-convenient, ultra-moisturizing options!
4. Travel bottles
If there is not a travel-sized option to be found for your must-have products, it is very easy to find TSA-approved bottles that you can fill with liquids, creams, and sprays.
5. Travel-Sized Tools
Arm yourself with travel-sized hair tools! The Pattern Travel-sized Brush is perfect for detangling.
6. Mini Styling Set
Pack along a mini hair styling set, such as the Curlsmith Defrizzion Dryer, comes with a travel bag, back stand, diffuser, and comb attachment.
You could also bring the lightweight Shark XSKHD4DA FlexStyle Curl-Defining Diffuser instead, which you can easily fit over a hair dryer at a hotel or friend’s house to create a diffusing effect.
7. International Adapters
Traveling internationally? Prepare with an international travel adapter plug, so you can still use your favorite styling tools! The universal travel power adapter includes four different plugs that nest together into a small, single unit to make sure you have portable power wherever you go.
8. Hair Gloves
If you wish to avoid heat styling altogether, make sure to bring a hair glove to scrunch your curls and speed up the natural drying process! You don’t want to use rough hotel towels on your hair, so Curl Keepr offers quick drying globes, an anti-frizz hair drying glove perfect to avoid breakage and keep your hair smooth.
Where are you traveling to this season, and what curly products will you be taking along? Safe travels to all!
