Ways to Fake Having Thick Hair
By Diane Mary · Updated October 13, 2015

A full head of thick, luscious hair is quite beautiful, isn’t it? Whether you were born with finer hair or you notice your hair began thinning over the years, you can still fake voluminous hair to the rest of the world. Here are six ways to fake having thick hair.

1. Use a volumizing shampoo

One of the fastest ways to fake having thick hair is certainly with the use of the right products. Volumizing shampoos and cleansing conditioners give the illusion of thicker, fuller hair. Many of them also have ingredients inside that can encourage thicker curly hair from the roots over time, with consistent use. My pick: SheaMoisture Yucca & Baobab Thickening Shampoo

2. Use a thickening mousse or gel

A thickening mousse can give your hair all day volume with soft, touchable hold. No flat hair here! You apply either one on damp hair after the shower and comb it through the lengths, then style as usual. My Pick: Living Proof Full Thickening Mousse

3. Use a round brush with a heat protectant

Blow drying your hair with a round brush from root to tip will help smooth the hair. Turning the hair upside down during the blow drying process will give additional lift and volume. Do not use a flat or paddle brush if you have fine or thin hair–they are designed to smooth and flatten the cuticles. Don’t forget to use a heat protector spray so your hair gets minimally heat damaged. My Pick: Nubian Heritage Honey and Black Seed Heat Protectant Keratin Spray

4. Use a root lifting powder

Volume gives the appearance of thicker hair and volume is created at the root. Massaging a root lifting powder into the scalp and teasing the hair will help the hair to appear fuller and give added volume. A good root lifting powder will absorb almost instantly leaving no powdery residue behind. My Pick: Big Sexy Hair Powder Play Volumizing and Texturizing Powder

5. Use Velcro rollers with hairspray

Wrapping sections of your hair around large Velcro rollers and gently hitting it with the blow dryer will give you hair that is 1980s high but with modern day style. Simply blow dry the face-framing pieces and top section of your hair, wrapping sections around one or two large Velcro rollers. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, shake it out, and scrunch in a nice flexible hold hairspray. My Pick: Devacurl Flexible-Hold Hair Spray

6. Get the right cut

The right haircut will make a huge different. Consider a hairstyle that will flatter fine hair such as a classic bob. Another option is a shoulder-grazing cut angled in long layers around the face. If you have fine hair that is really long and looking too thin or stringy at the ends, cutting off a couple inches may help.

Every woman wants to feel good about their hair. With so many ways to fake having thick hair, you can get the hair of your dreams in no time.
