7 Essential Rules for Blow Drying Curly Hair Without Damage

So, I’ve shared before that, when it comes to natural hair—and hair-length retention—tips, in many ways, I’m a total non-conformist. One example is the “Don’t you dare apply heat to your hair” rule many people adhere to. While I get how that may work for some, it was actually while I saturate my hair with moisture that I was getting more tangles and seeing more breakage.

After a little trial-and-error, what I discovered was when I blow out my hair on wash day (which for me is pretty much twice a month) and then put it into some sort of protective style, or I simply braid it at night (to keep it stretched) and then take it out in the morning, my hair has grown more than it ever has (and shoot, I am a high porosity kind of gal). That’s why I am of the personal belief that it’s not so much that heat is not our friend; it’s simply that we need to learn how to apply it correctly.

Since this is the fall season and, due to a lack of outdoor heat, you might want to rock a blowout more than usual, I wanted to share with you some ways to use a blow dryer on your hair in such a way that it will not damage your hair; how you can keep it stretched without overdoing the dryer process.

Are you ready to become allies, rather than enemies, with your blow dryer? Check out our essential tips for blow drying curly hair.

1. Choose the right dryer.

7 Essential Rules for Blow Drying Curly Hair Without Damage

I promise you, if more of us paid attention to this particular tip alone, we’d be a lot less anxious about wearing blowouts more often. Using the kind of blow dryers that have limited temperature options, aren’t made out of either tourmaline or ceramic, and don’t have at least a couple of different attachments is the kind of dryer that will fry your hair—if not immediately, after a few uses, for sure.

That’s why, before purchasing a hair dryer, it’s a good idea to do some thorough research to see which one will truly work best for you. PATTERN by Tracee Ellis Ross debuted her high-performing blow-dryer in 2023, which features four unique attachments to help shape, smooth, and stretch your curls, coils, and waves.

2. Deep condition your hair.

There’s no way around that blow-drying your hair will take a bit of a toll on your natural locks. One way it does this is by zapping out the moisture that your hair needs to remain moisturized and frizzless. Something that you can do to stay a step ahead of the dry heat that comes from your dryer is to deep condition your hair. I don’t mean for five minutes, either.

7 Essential Rules for Blow Drying Curly Hair Without Damage

Using a hydrating deep conditioner like the SheaMoisture Bond Repair Masque Amla Oil can help to restore and renew brittle strands that could be damaged from the heat. Once you apply the conditioner to your freshly washed hair, let it sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it. Then, use a detangling comb to get as many kinks and tangles out of your hair as you can. Trust me, the more “pre-work” that you do to your hair before drying it, the less damage your dryer will be able to do.

3. Remove as much dampness as possible.

One mistake that I used to make quite a bit was running the dryer through my hair after only briefly towel-drying it. Do. Not. Do. This. You are only setting yourself and your hair up for it to fry, especially if you place your dryer in a high setting. Instead, use a T-shirt to get as much excess water out of your hair as possible. Then, give your hair time to air dry between 60-80 percent. Just make sure that you apply a leave-in conditioner (we recommend Aunt Jackie’s Curls and Coils Quench formula) so that your hair will still be manageable once it loses some of the moisture that came from washing it.

4. Use a creamy thermal heat protectant.

7 Essential Rules for Blow Drying Curly Hair Without Damage

The next step, which is an absolute must, is to put on a thermal heat protectant. This is such a necessary step because, when your hair is dry, your cuticles are open. When the heat hits them, that makes them far more susceptible to heat damage. Applying a thermal heat protectant to your tresses smooths your cuticles so that less damage occurs. Just make sure you use a spray only if you’ve got fine hair. Heat protectants in the form of cream are far better for hair that is thick or is a type 4 in texture.

5. Apply oils after, not during.

7 Essential Rules for Blow Drying Curly Hair Without Damage

It’s always a good idea to seal your ends, too. Not only because they are the oldest parts of your hair but also because you want to ensure they get enough moisture so they do not split once the heat hits them. Just make sure that, as far as the sealing process goes, you apply the oil to your hair while you’re applying your leave-in conditioner.

Let it sit for 10 minutes, and then use your hair dryer. Oh, and try to avoid adding more oil to your hair as you are drying your hair. Why? Well, oil and heat are the perfect storm for fried hair or, at the very least, extremely frizzy hair. If you want a little more sheen that oil tends to provide, add a little more once your blowout is completely done.

6. Blow dry, downwards, in sections.

Now that we’ve gotten a little of prepping out of the way to achieve the perfect blowout, technique has to be factored in, too. Make sure to section your hair into 4-6 pieces, just so that it will be easier to blow it dry without tangling it up. If you opt not to use an attachment, use a round brush and start at the bottom of your hair, working your way up to the roots.

Use your hands to roll your hair up and pull it straight, kind of simultaneously. Also, make sure to dry downward as much as possible. When you blow your hair backward, that can sometimes go against the cuticles of your hair and cause damage. I

7. Don’t overdo it.

One more thing. Sometimes, even when our hair is prepped just right, and we’re using our blow dryer just like we should, we still end up wrecking our hair. How? By mistaking our dryer for a flat iron. What I mean by that is while some blow dryers are pretty impressive, none of them are really designed to make your hair bone straight.

But if you forget this and keep passing through your hair over and over and over again, the combo of the heat and tension can also end up damaging your hair. So, if you want a long, straight look, get a professional to flat iron your hair. But if you simply want length and texture, rock your blowout—and trust that no more than three passes with your dryer is all that you need.

Which of these techniques do you plan to use in the future? If you prefer to opt for a diffuser, check out How to Use a Diffuser Without Ruining Your Curls.

Holiday party season is here. With that, comes shopping for the perfectly festive dresses for office and family celebrations alike. To bring it all together, though? An elevated hairstyle that still shows off your curls.

With just a few simple steps and the right products, you can create stunning, curly hair-approved party looks from your home. Whether you’re going for elegant, playful, or bold, there’s something for everyone to choose from below.

Super Defined Glam Curls

To achieve an elegant look that enhances your natural curls, wash your hair and apply a leave-in conditioner. Section your hair and apply curl-defining cream using your fingers or the praying hand’s method. Then, use a diffuser to dry your hair and separate curls for volume. Finish by adding shine spray or hair oil to the ends for a polished, party-ready glow.

Half-Up, Half-Down

You can never go wrong with a half-up, half-down hairstyle. With freshly washed curls, start with using a curl refresher spray or leave-in conditioner. You can either use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to part and separate the top half from the bottom half. Gather the top section of your hair into a loose ponytail or twist it into a small bun to keep your curls intact.

Wet Look

You can apply a generous amount of curl-defining gel to damp hair for a sleek, high-fashion party style, channeling Rihanna. Make sure to slick the roots back for a polished, wet appearance. To finish the look, scrunch the ends to maintain defined, glossy curls.

Side-Swept Curls

If you’re looking for a classic hairstyle, simply sweep your curls to one side and secure them with bobby pins. If you want a glamorous style, add a glittery clip to give it an extra dose of sparkle.

Elegant-Messy Curly Bun

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/3096293489779939

Without a doubt, a bun can make you look put together. All you have to do is grab and gather your curls at the top of your head and pull them back in a ponytail. You can pull the ponytail halfway through on the last loop of the tie to create a loose bun look with a few ends sticking out.

As life would have it, as I’m sitting here and typing this out, my natural hair is in a blowout—and I absolutely adore it! While I’m in the process of trying to grow these tresses of mine to a longer length, I think I’ve found my groove in rockin’ box braids in the summer and blowouts in the fall/winter season.

If there’s a part of you that’s already side-eyeing me because you think that wearing a blowout more than a couple of times a year is bad for my hair, eh—I beg to differ. If there’s one thing that this natural hair journey has taught me, it’s that all of us are different; what works for one does not necessarily work for the other. And, as far as my hair is concerned, I’ve actually experienced more growth since I’ve been applying heat than when I was applying the no-heat method (too much moisturize weakens my cuticles; it’s weird but true).

Not to say that blowouts don’t require some extra TLC; it most certainly does. So, as the weather is getting cooler out here (which means less sweating which means less shrinkage), if you want to stretch your own curls out, here’s how to do it with as little heat and/or inclement weather damage as possible.

1. Buy the right dryer

Straighten Curly Hair Like a Pro: 10 Tips to Stay Frizz-Free

There is no way that you are going to protect your hair from potential blowout damage if you don’t start with basics, and that is investing in a great hairdryer. Trying to figure out which one works best for you requires a little bit of trial and error, but thanks to a lot of naturalistas on YouTube, they can help to remove some of the guesswork.

For instance, a ton of natural hair ladies are quite fond of the Laifen Hair Dryer SE, Blow Dryer with Diffuser & Nozzle for Curly Hair (it’ll cost you around $125). It offers up some other options while providing a thorough breakdown of the pros and cons of each.

2. Get a good trim

I’m hoping you know by now that trimming your hair will not help it to grow faster. What it does do is remove split ends and fairy knots. What it also does is help to give your hair a nice shape; something that you definitely want while rocking a blowout. The reason why I thought this was important to mention is that, while some stylists claim that you should trim your hair every 4-6 weeks, it’s my personal opinion that you should do it as often as your hair needs it.

For some, it’s that often, but for others, it’s 3-4 times a year (if that much). Basically, it all depends on how well you take care of your hair (especially your ends) in between trims. But yeah, if it’s been several months since the last time that you at least dusted your ends, your blowout will only look better if you trim your tresses first.

3. Deep condition your locks

Straighten Curly Hair Like a Pro: 10 Tips to Stay Frizz-Free

Hopefully, you’re deep conditioning your hair on a regular basis (at least twice a month). But if there’s ever a time when applying this step is crucial, it’s when you’re about to put heat on your hair. The reason why is that blow drying has a way of zapping the moisture out of your hair. This means that if you deep condition your tresses before pointing a dryer in your direction, that can help to keep your hair from losing moisture which can ultimately lead to split ends and breakage.

As far as what kind of conditioner to use, I’ve become a big fan of Aunt Jackie’s Coconut Crème Recipes Coco Repair Deep Hair Conditioner. I wash my hair, let the mixture sit on my head for at least 20 minutes, rinse thoroughly, and enjoy how unbelievably soft my hair is from root to tip.

4. Use a cream thermal protectant

When you’re about to blow out your hair, something that is an absolute must is a thermal heat protectant. What it basically does is serve as a barrier between your blow dryer (or any heat styling tool) and your hair. That said, something that used to baffle me was, no matter how much thermal heat protectant I would use, my hair still didn’t feel as soft as I thought it should.

Straighten Curly Hair Like a Pro: 10 Tips to Stay Frizz-Free

When I mentioned it to a customer service associate at Sally’s Beauty Supply, she shared with me that she felt that thermal sprays are for fine hair while thicker hair should use a cream. And you know what? Ever since I switched over to a cream, my hair has been smoother, softer, and shinier. But whether your hair is fine or thick, out of all of the tips here, please don’t skip out on this one. Thermal heat protectant is a true hair-saver on so many levels.

5. Add a little oil

Straighten Curly Hair Like a Pro: 10 Tips to Stay Frizz-Free

The finishing touch on any blowout is sheen. Lots and lots of sheen! You could apply some in the form of a hairspray. However, I prefer to apply a mixture of essential oil with a bonding oil. One of my personal favorite combos is jasmine oil and sweet almond oil. It looks divine and smells unbelievable from the time I leave my house until I walk right back through my front door.

6. Use low (and minimal) heat

It might sound crazy to hear me say this, but the reason why so many people experience heat damage with blowouts isn’t due to their blow dryer; it’s actually because of how hot the setting is. Well, that and the fact that they opt to dry their hair while it’s still sopping well which can cause them to literally “fry” their hair. Two things that you can do to reduce your risk of heat damage is to use an old T-shirt to soak up as much water as possible from your wet hair. Then, use a low or medium setting to dry it. Sure, it may take longer to dry, but it’s worth it since it means less breakage overall. Right?

7. Braid it up every night

https://www.tiktok.com/@amiragilford0/video/7324921446893997343?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7319876376193680927

If you plan on wearing a blowout for a week or more, between humidity, hairstyling, and rolling around in the bed at night, you’re bound to experience some shrinkage. One way to reduce that is to keep your hair stretched out as you catch some z-z-zs. One way to do that is by avoiding using the dryer again (the more heat, the more vulnerable your hair is to damage); instead braid your hair up before turning it. It doesn’t have to be a set of award-winning cornrows or anything. Just section your hair with your hands and put 4-8 braids in your hair. It’s a heatless way to wake up to a blowout that is still full and fabulous.

8. Keep maintenance products to a minimum

Straighten Curly Hair Like a Pro: 10 Tips to Stay Frizz-Free

If you want your blowout to have volume and movement, it’s best to apply as little product as possible. But if you do want to add a Lil’ sumthin’ sumthin’ just so that it will look shiny or fresh in between blowouts, we’ve got you covered. If you like to support new collections (especially ones that are run by fellow naturalistas), one that I have recently become a fan of—and do actually use—is The Doux’s Press Play Thermal Styling System.

9. Keep your hands out of your hair

Straighten Curly Hair Like a Pro: 10 Tips to Stay Frizz-Free

I already know. Once you’ve blown your hair out and you see all of that extra length, it can be tempting to continually run your hands through them like you’re in a self-produced hair commercial or something. But remember—your hair is already a little stressed out because it has been stretched out. You don’t want to put even more tension on it by constantly running your hands through it, too.

So yeah, as much as possible, keep the manipulation down to a bare minimum. Also, if you can’t seem to stop messing with your hair, no matter how much you try, wrap it up in a scarf or something.

10. ALWAYS wrap it up at night

https://www.tiktok.com/@anyelymariee/video/7285018452673269034?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7319876376193680927

No matter how you try and prop your head up at night or how “pretty” you attempt to sleep, the only way to get a good night’s rest is if you’re not worrying about your hair the entire time. So, if you’re not going to braid it all up, at least pull it up into a pineapple (with the help of a silk or satin scarf). It will reduce shrinkage and tangles so that all you’ve got to do in the morning is put a little oil in your hair, maybe run a Denman brush through it, and head on out of the door. You. With your glorious blowout!

The K-Beauty boom in the U.S. circa 2015-2016 cemented the culture as a power player in the beauty market. 10-step routines, snail mucin essence, and glass skin are all now part of every beauty lover’s lexicon, with beloved brands and products becoming staples in our routines. But many believe that something was missing to get these products and trends to transcend what could be seen as gimmicky.

“I think consumers were a bit distracted by the novelty and perceived strangeness and cuteness of a lot of Korean products and routines,” says Michelle Lee, former editor-in-chief of Allure and founder of Monologue beauty agency. “That detracted from the scientific innovation and ingredients.”

“American consumers viewed K-Beauty as quirky rather than essential,” agrees Sarah Chung Park, founder and CEO of Landing. “[K-Beauty failed] to replace their trusted drugstore staples or high-end luxury products.”

It’s no easy task breaking into an oversaturated market. And it’s an even harder task continually innovating and maintaining relevance with consumers. Thanks to TikTok and Gen Z’s interest in the skincare category, K-Beauty seems to be getting a second life of sorts. “The modern beauty consumer cares a great deal about ingredients,” says Lee. “This has teed up a perfect environment for Korean brands, who are ingredient connoisseurs.”

So with that momentum, below are the 10 beauty trends that are going to take over 2025 and change the way we look at K-beauty. You heard it here first, straight from the experts who know best.

A Spotlight On Hair Care

K-Beauty has been synonymous with skincare in the U.S. market, but now experts predict that U.S. beauty lovers will be better introduced to K-Beauty hair care. “[It] is another exciting area of growth for K-beauty,” says Charlotte Cho, founder of K-Beauty e-commerce site Soko Glam and skincare brand Then I Met You. “The frequent hair-washing habits of Korean consumers (typically daily or every other day) have driven innovation in advanced formulations and multi-steps hair routines.”

Cho goes on to explain that K-Beauty hair care brands are leaning into comprehensive solutions tailored to some of our most pressing hair concerns, such as hair loss and dandruff, with scalp tonics, mists and nourishing treatments. Lee agrees and says that since the scalp is an extension of facial skin care, it has a natural path to success here. Her recommendation is a brand like Dr. Groot

Fragrance Expansion

Cho says to also expect innovations in the fragrance space. Fragrance lovers are already familiar with beloved K-Beauty brand Elorea, which is Soko Glam’s first fragrance curation, but she says to look out for other fragrance brands such as Nonfiction to take over Korea and Asia markets.

Sun Cushions

It’s no secret that Korean sunscreen is top-tier. Lee says to look out for if and when the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approves UV filters found in Korean formulations (“[This] would open up a whole new world of sunscreens here,” she says). But you’ll also see new forms of sun care. She points to sun cushions, which are similar to the foundation and BB and CC compacts we’ve come to know and love but just in sunscreen. We love the Elroel Pang Pang Sun Cushion, which has a lightweight creamy texture that blends in so smoothly into the skin and provides SPF 50 protection. Alicia Yoon, founder of Peach & Lily, agrees and points to sun protection invisible patches becoming thinner and less noticeable.

Single-Solution Products

A 180 from the famed 10-step routine, experts say that K-Beauty is looking to be more focused in the skincare department. Expect to see products that aim to give you a single solution for targeted areas and problems. “The biggest change will be products newly produced will be more specific to skincare concerns, such as eczema, rosacea, dark spots, or pores,” says Winnie Zhong, founder of New York City-based Asian beauty store Senti Senti. “Products produced will have less to no fragrance, little to no essential oils, minimal, and patented ingredients (more science).”

Park agrees and points to skincare brand Mixsoon, which she says focuses on single-ingredient essences. Something like its Bean Essence has become a hero product, but she says their product lineup is as innovative as it gets and offers many solutions for the most pressing skin concerns. Zhong points to Dear, Klairs, an indie K-Beauty brand that prioritizes simple yet efficient ingredients. Something like its Maple Energy line, she says, is suitable for even the most sensitive skin and helps get that dewy glow.

For Yoon, she sees a lot of conversations around skin immunity and strengthening our skin’s protective barrier with products like the Peach & Lily Rescue Party Barrier Restore Serum

Cream Lip and Cheek Products

If you’ve been wanting to see more K-Beauty makeup, you’re in luck. Experts agree that next year will be the year more brands make their way to the U.S. market, especially in the lip and cheek category. “Everyone always talks about Korean skincare and complexion products like cushion foundations, but the time has come for excellent Korean cream cheek and lip products to get big here in 2025,” Lee says.

She goes on to say that matte finishes will especially be big next year and points to products like Fwee’s Lip & Cheek Blurry Pudding Pots that give you very pigmented matte color but won’t leave skin feeling dry. She also like Rom&nd for its lip tints in matte and other textures.

Color Diversity

As innovative as the skincare can be, there was a lot left to be desired when it came to its makeup and the shade range provided. But experts say 2025 will be the year that K-Beauty makeup corrects that and finally expands on it. Park credits Tirtir for pioneering the shift and to be on the lookout for emerging brands like Milktouch and Unleashia to launch cushion compacts with over 20 shades.

Overnight Masks

Whether you’re partaking in the morning shed trend or just looking to give your skin some major T.L.C. overnight, experts say that the sheet masks are going to have their moment in 2025. “Koreans are also known for creating and reinventing formats,” says Lee. “With the popularity of the overnight masks from Biodance and Luvum, we’ll start to see some new tweaks on familiar formats like sheet masks.”

“These products, which solidify serum formulas for overnight absorption, are a major focus,” adds Park. “Biodance is already popular, while brands like Sungboon Editor, COSRX, and indie favorites like Luvum are entering the U.S. market with innovative versions.”

Clinical At-Home Treatments

“Korean beauty continues to blur the lines between clinical treatments and at-home skincare by bringing cutting-edge innovations straight to the bottle,” says Cho. “These trends focus on targeted treatments that mimic the effects of professional dermatological procedures, applied topically for convenience and accessibility.”

For example, PDRN, which is the ingredient derived from salmon DNA for its regenerative, was once only available through injectable treatments. Now, she says that brands use PDRN in their serums and creams to repair the skin barrier, boost the skin’s elasticity, and promote wound healing. (Cho also hints at new launches for the new year from Then I Met You, so stay tuned for that).

Another fun innovation that experts are looking forward to are skin-penetrating spicules. Inspired by microneedling, she says that spicules, which are microscopic needles made from marine sponges, penetrate the skin and deliver active ingredients. Park agrees and calls out VT Cosmetics’ Reedle Shot, Mixsoon’s Peptide Cica Hyalshot, and Medicube’s Zero Exosome Shot as the most notable launches to be on your radar.

AI-Powered Devices

How does one improve the viral Medicube? Add AI. Cho says that skin care devices like the Medicube will not only continue its reign on the market, but will soon include AI-tools that allow for a personalized experience. “Looking beyond next year, expect to see advancements in AI-powered diagnostics, apps, and devices will analyze various factors that can lead to customized skincare treatments,” she says.

Prioritizing Sustainability

Beauty as a whole has been pushing for more sustainability in all of its practices. For K-Beauty specifically, Yoon says that packaging will not only enhance user experience but be more eco-friendly. Cho agrees and predicts that we’ll be seeing brands focus on biodegradable or refillable containers and the use of upcycled and plant-based ingredients in formulations. She also sees brands being more transparent around carbon footprints, sourcing practices, and their methods on zero-waste production.

The Right Rollers for Every Hairstyle & Curl Pattern

Hair rollers are used to achieve curls and waves without using a curling iron or wand. There are different types of rollers, including heated, and they vary in length and width. Many who use hair rollers love the lasting hold they give, especially when creating a wet set. Roller sets also give volume to your tresses and a uniform look if you have different types of curls on your head.

Many often believe that curly-haired women do not want or need rollers, but that could not be further from the truth! Curly girls use hair rollers for the same reasons straight-haired women do: for a uniform, sleek, curly style that lasts. Also, women with coily hair can use them to loosen their curls, and women with looser curls and waves can use rollers to achieve tighter curls.

There are several ways to curl your hair, but rollers seem to give smoothness like no other curling tool. The type of roller to use depends on your curl pattern, length, and desired look. If you have hair on your head, we can find the best rollers for curly hair to give you the styles you crave.

Cold Wave Rods or Perm Rods

Most associated with older women opting for curly perms, perm rods are a big hit with the naturals because they offer numerous styles. They come in several sizes, from the thickest rods to give loose curls to the smallest rods, giving the tightest curls possible. The thin ones are great for curly styles when your hair is in the teeny weeny afro (TWA) stage.

They are easy to use because you curl your hair around the rod and then secure it with the rubber banded tip. They are great for a twist and curl, curly fro, and just a traditional roller set. These perm rods can actually be used on natural or relaxed tresses.

Flexi Rods

Flexi rods are long, flexible, cushioned rods designed to create spiral curls without pins, clips, or pain. They give consistent, sleek, bouncy spiral curls, although it may take some time to get used to them with their odd shape.

These should be used on wet, detangled hair to get the best look, especially tighter-coiled textures. You section the hair into 1-inch sections and wrap the hair around the flexi rod, rolling the rod up toward the scalp. The tighter the desired curl, the smaller the section, and the opposite is true for bigger curls. They do come in varying widths for curl sizes.

Magnetic Rollers

These are the smooth rollers in several colors according to the size of the curl desired. They create smooth, voluminous curls but must be used on smoothed and detangled wet hair. They can be tricky to use since they require pins to stay in place and, if not properly installed, can leave wavy, curly, or bushy roots. These are sometimes used by naturals to stretch their hair as a preparation for straightening or a substitute for straightening. You want to use the biggest rollers that work for your length to achieve the best results.

Curlformers, the newest and most revolutionary curling tool, was created in 2008. They are orange and pink aerated tubes with a hook rod for installation. They create barrel curls that are smooth and sleek, great for curly girls who want to rock spiral curls.

Naturals have fallen in love with these hair rollers. Although the hook may seem intimidating at first (it is long), if you use it correctly, the hair will not be damaged.

You get better with each application, and the hair is smooth and curled into a spiral or barrel curl perfectly. One of the best parts of this is the ends of your hair (if fully encased in the Curlformer) are smooth and not frayed.

They sound painful but are great for the coarse, wavy ladies. This roller is also perfect for short hair, and when used correctly, it will not damage your tresses. Just remember always gently to unroll them until they release all the hair and they can be used on damp or dry hair.

Heated or Steam Rollers

Great for quick fixes and all hair types. Heated rollers just need to be heated up and then applied, but if taken out when completely cold, they can get entangled in your tresses. Trying the steam rollers may be a better option since they are better for your hair but take longer to heat up. They are available in varying diameters and used on dry hair to create long-lasting curls and minimize frizz. Heated and steam rollers are still better than curling wands and irons.

Winter wash days for coily hair require a little extra love and care to combat the dryness and brittleness that come with the colder months. The key to maintaining healthy, defined coils is to focus on moisture-rich products that hydrate and protect.

For starters, reach for a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo following a deep conditioning treatment to give moisture and strengthen your hair. Then, you can use a leave-in conditioner to lock in moisture. Meanwhile, a curl cream or styling gel can help define your coils and reduce frizz. Don’t forget to add an oil or hair serum to seal in all the hydration and give your curls that healthy, shiny finish. In other words, with the right essentials, you can keep your coily hair soft, bouncy, and full of life all winter long.

Below, discover our favorite essentials to add to your wash day routine.

If you are experiencing flat roots, or hair that looks limp, lifeless, and frizzy, the Super Scrunch Method can help get your curls back on track. The steps to do this method are summarized below.

  1. Work a leave-in into your hair in sections. Ensure your hair is fully detangled.
  2. Apply a foam, work it in, and then use a Denman brush to help form curl clumps.
  3. Emulsify 2-3 pumps of gel with 6-8 sprays of volumizing spray between your palms.
  4. Scrunch this mixture into your hair from the mid-shafts to the roots, scrunching upwards.
  5. Scrunch your roots with a microfiber towel to remove excess water, wait five minutes, and scrunch your roots again with your hands. This will prevent your roots from drying flat.

If you have a small area of hair that always seems to fall flat no matter what you do, try these steps to give it more body:

  1. Ensure the section is thoroughly saturated and that your leave-in and styler(s) have been applied.
  2. Using a duckbill clip, root clip the section on a diagonal, lifting it slightly at the base.
  3. Spritz the roots with volumizing spray, and then allow them to dry.

From cranberry makeup to latte undertones, food has been used to describe color palettes and skin tones in beauty all year long. And, while the price of beauty products, and food, increases, brands and influencers—like Rhode Skin’s lip balm-adjacent cinnamon roll tutorial and Nara Smith making moisturizer from beef and beeswax—are using our unscratched grocery items to market to our hunger. But we’re craving more than just food.

To appetize the (almost) edible beauty trends, the Pantone Color Institute announced Mocha Mousse, a rich, brown hue with warm undertones, as Color of the Year for 2025. “[The color] nurtures with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of cacao, chocolate, and coffee, appealing to our desire for comfort,” writes vice president of Pantone, Laurie Pressman.

Each year, Pantone’s winning hue represents the current relationship between culture and color, spanning every industry including beauty. “Underpinned by our desire for everyday pleasures, Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence,” says color expert Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director at Pantone.

More than just our desire for food and beauty, the color, numbered 17-1230, satiates our thirst for shade-inclusivity in an industry which often deserts darker skin tones. Mocha Mousse can be seen as a response to 2024’s Peach Fuzz shade, which received backlash for the obvious resemblance to white skin.

“A light shade of orange, with an evocative name that immediately recalls human touch (in perhaps a too specifically white skin range), has been chosen to represent the desire of meeting in real life,” wrote Vogue India in 2023. Meanwhile, a number of comments on Pantone’s social media announcement called the peach hue “tone deaf” and an “out of touch color.”

Now, the deep, natural shade of Mocha Mousse represents the inclusion of brown as a form of sustainable beauty. Selected to extend our perception of browns, the color’s rich, creamy hue is meant to be an “unpretentious classic” and “tasteful touch of glamor” spotted throughout fashion month’s spring/summer 2025 season.

So, with 2025 a few weeks ahead, closing the year with your best chocolate and coffee-toned beauty looks should be on your “in’s” list for the holidays.

It’s that time of year again: family gatherings, gift giving, and cozy evenings in. Additionally, ‘tis the season for holiday parties, too. That likely means you’re on the lookout for hairdo ideas that will turn heads and inspire festive cheer.

Lucky for you, there’s an abundance of inspiration out there. Our favorite celebrities, for example, are turning heads with stunning hair looks as of late. If you’re considering getting a silk press this season, take a look at Coco Jones at the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Otherwise, you might want to go for a classic Hollywood look, such as a slicked-back straight hairstyle or a short bob, like the music trio FLO. Or Maybe, like Lizzo, a braided crown or is a little more your speed. And did someone say blondes have more fun? With their bouncy ‘dos, Sabrina Carpenter and Wicked’s Ariana Grande certainly say so.

Regardless of your preference, below are a few dazzling hairstyle ideas to make a statement this holiday season.
